CPRJ:CPRJ & AdsaleCPRJ.com reporter Rettig:Dr. Rainer Rettig, Senior Vice President of the Polycarbonate Advanced Resins Division in Asia-Pacific of Bayer MaterialScience
CPRJ:Would you please introduce us the new technology that will be displayed by Bayer in CHANAPLAS 2010? What are the main features? Rettig:First of all, thank you for your interest in Bayer MaterialScience. And we are delighted to meet you again at this Chinaplas in Shanghai.
As you may aware that the global political and social landscape is changing ever more dynamically, driven by global mega trends like climate change, a growing and aging population, and globalization & urbanization. These mega trends present us with major challenges, but hold tremendous opportunities.
China continues to be our focus as a growth driver for Bayer. Last year China achieved GDP 8.7% which provides the confidence to BMS as well as our customers. The country's Top Ten Industrial Revitalization Plan will directly strengthen investment related to public infrastructure (railway and construction, etc.), energy saving and technology advancement, where Bayer MaterialScience's innovative products, tailored solution as well as advanced technology will generate good opportunities for us. Specifically, automotive, construction, and consumer electrical/electronics, IT and appliance investment will create good opportunities for our polycarbonates solutions. All these truly help us to tackle the challenges and achieve a sustainable future. A glimpse into the future of the above trendy industries will be made possible with Bayer MaterialScience's exhibits at its booth.
At the show, you may find out how BMS PC-glazing reduces the weight of automotive and saves the reduction of CO2 emissions. You will also find LED technology which provides the free-design of the lamp. And how LED lights achieve the energy conservation.
CPRJ:Looking back at 2009, how was the domestic and overseass sales for Bayer?
Rettig:2009 was a successful year for BMS' polycarbonate business in China. We continued with our investments and finally inaugurated the Color Competence and Design Center in Guangzhou.
To offer specific solutions for a variety of downstream industries, BMS opened its Color Competence and Design Center in Guangzhou last year. The facility added on our existing network of capabilities in Asia. It provides the customers with even greater flexibility in service and development, and increases the speed to market significantly.
In the mean time, BMS aim to drive innovation not only in materials, technology, but also in service and solutions. This is reflected through our focused setup of bundling capabilities for better serving growth markets with differentiated applications in line with general trends emerging in our industries. The same innovative mindset is also reason for our engagement in initiatives such as the Business Strategy Forum in cooperation with CEIBS Business School, creating value-added for customers by providing best-in-class business insights and thought-leadership knowledge, as well as creating a platform for CEOs from the polycarbonate industry to exchange ideas. Outlook Mini MBAs / AutoForum in 2010.
CPRJ:What is Bayer's major development plan and target for 2010? Rettig:We are confident about a long-term sustainable growth following the actions we have taken to meet the challenges. Our strategic target is to take highly focused approach to continuously driving the market growth for downstream market through innovation and market leading technology in our APAC and China market.
In line with the strategy, we continuously invest in our R&D in the field of automotive, IT, E/E, etc. We believe BMS's innovative products, tailored solution and leading technology will achieve a sustainable and greener environment. Therefore, we have repositioned our PRDC in Shanghai to drive innovation in China and we will continue to investigate opportunities to invest in innovation there.
CPRJ:How do you observe the new development trend of the industry in the coming few years? Rettig:We regard the polycarbonates as an attractive business and we expect the market to become more balanced again this year and beyond.
We are optimistic that as demand for better quality products grows, especially with the increasing call for sustainable and green products, polycarbonate will be increasingly used to replace existing materials because of its beneficial characteristics.
Moving forward BMS aims to introduce more successful applications in the automotive and transportation, the construction, the IT and E/E industries that substitute the conventional materials or drive technology advancement in the mobile telecommunications, medical and appliance industries.
CPRJ:"Green Plastic. Our Goal. Our Future" is the theme of CHINAPLAS 2010. Does Bayer prepare any related exhibit or activity for the main theme?
Rettig:We are always equipped with the advanced knowledge. As you know, last year we had the cooperation with Sichuan University on the bio patent. This material is biodegradable and can be equipped flame retardant and applied to a wide rang of industries, such as automotive, IT and electronics.
Currently we are in the discussion with some of the world's leading electronic and automotive companies for the future application of this material.
CPRJ:The WorldExpo is coming, too. Does Bayer or your clients participated in development or exhibition of the expo?
Rettig:Yes, some of our customers used our raw materials. I am sure you will find BMS material in the show.
(Note: With CHINAPLAS 2010 approaching, official media CPRJ, CPRJ International and AdsaleCPRJ.com are extending coverage by conducting interviews with exhibitors.)
