Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings strives to provide complete solutions for different applications. At CHINALAS 2011, three of its subsidiary companies, Mitsubishi Chemical, Mitsubishi Plastics and Mitsubishi Rayon, jointly exhibited an electric concept car solely made of their own materials and technologies. Naoaki Ishiwatari, Marketing Manager of Automotive Solutions, Mitsubishi Chemical, and Shigeru Tamura, Marketing General Manager of Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corporation, told CPRJ more of their complete solutions for the automotive industry.
CPRJ:Mitsubishi used to showcase its ability to produce spare parts of automobiles. What is the reason behind exhibiting a whole car?
Mr Ishiwatari: It is because we are optimistic about China's fast developing automotive industry. Besides, our group is heavily involved in the industry. Of all our 60 manufacturing plants in China, 33 are related to vehicles.
CPRJ:What are the concepts showcased by the car?
Mr Ishiwatari: The car roof is built of polycarbonate. The body is made of reinforced carbon fiber. LED headlights are installed. The front panel consists of organic Electro-Luminescence (similar to light emitting diodes). The lithium batteries and all solar energy parts such as the circuit, separator and electrolyte solutions are produced by our corporation for the sake of consistent quality.
CPRJ: We can see that your company has done a lot of work in saving energy. Then how is the car’s on road performance?
Mr Ishiwatari: The concept car weights about 490kg only, which can improve energy efficiency by 35% and reduce carbon emissions by 340 million tons annually. High performance heat dispersion material is used in the LED headlights.
Furthermore, Mitsubishi Chemical is in cooperation with Chery Automobile to develop solutions for vehicles.
CPRJ: How was the performance of Mitsubishi Chemical last year?
Mr Tamura: Total turnover was about 3.1 trillion yen last financial year, with the automobile, environmental and medical industry recording the best results. We had good results in China of around 200 billion yen. More investments will be made in the country. The battery cathode material plant in Qingdao is under construction and is expected to start production next year, and the Suzhou polyester film plant for the production of liquid crystal cell will operate in 2013.
