3,528 recycled plastics bottles were transformed into a 4-meter high "Alive Bottles Tree", erecting at the fairground of CHINAPLAS 2011. This event aims to drive plastics and rubber industries to actively apply the recycling technology and carry out environmental protection and low emission production in various aspects.
This record-breaking event, "Beating Record by Recycling Bottles", was held immediately after the grand opening of CHINAPLAS 2011 this morning (May 17) in Guangzhou. In the four-day exhibition, over 80,000 local and overseas visitors and members of the media, plus more than 2,400 exhibitors will witness the birth of the "Alive Bottles Tree" made by 3,528 recycled plastic bottles. Meanwhile, the organizer will attempt to gain an entry in the Guinness World Records.
Chen Shineng, Honorary President of China National Light Industry Council and Wang Ruixiang, President of China Machinery Industry Federation poured a solution of nutrients to six saplings of the "Alive Bottles Tree" to empower them with life. This symbolizes the recycling new force injected into plastics and rubber industries, harmonizing plastics, rubber and the nature. Officiating this ready-to-be Guinness World Records event, Mr Chen and Mr Wang then passed the saplings to Stanley Chu, Chairman of Adsale Exhibition Services Ltd, organizer of CHINAPLAS, and the sponsor representatives, including the Green Partner - Haitian International Holdings Ltd, Automatik Plastics Machinery GmbH, Plastic Bottles Sponsor - Guangzhou Valuda Group Co Ltd, Designer - Lee Chi Wing and Design Supporting Organization - The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, to hang them on the "Alive Bottles Tree". The organizer will also collect used plastic bottles from the exhibitors and visitors at the fairground, and arrange installation demonstrations for visitors.
Stanley Chu stated that the objective of organizing the event of "Beating Records by Recycling Bottles" was to raise the awareness and understanding on recycling technology of plastics and rubber industries in Asia and China. The industry will, as a result, follow closely the global recycling trend and grab the enormous business opportunities, leading the industry to move forward to sustainable development.
The organizer has specially invited Lee Chi Wing, a well-known product designer in Hong Kong, as the creative director of this installation. Mr Lee received different design awards in recent years, and his design of inflight economy class tableware for Cathay Pacific Airways won HKDA Asia Design Silver Awards. For the "Alive Bottles Tree", he used simple method to connect the recycled bottles to establish the form of the tree trunk and branches. Water and nutrients are poured into some of the bottles at the treetop, and vegetation is then put inside the bottles, just like leaves growing from the recycled bottles. This design implies the beauty and importance of harmony between plastics and nature, through which Mr Lee demonstrated the benefits brought by recycling and reuse in environmental protection.
Mr Chu said, "In 2010, the recycling rate of the PET plastic bottles in Switzerland reached 78%. For Japan, it now exceeds 66%, which is 0.361 million tons, with 4.6% increase by last year. In Europe, the PET plastic bottle recycling volume even reached its historical peak. Through Bottle-to-Bottle recycling, the rate has been increased from 8.1% to 11.1%. Although some of the countries have high recycling rates, there are now about 75% of the world's recycled bottles directly sent to landfill sites. The high percentage reflects the importance of promoting plastic bottles recycling.
In sustaining the development of the plastics and rubber industries, CHINAPLAS not only establishes a platform for technology and cooperation exchange, but also drives advanced technologies and shares the latest market updates in the industry. This year, "Reduce Carbon Emission with Plastics Recycling Technology" is one of the topics of the concurrently held Eco-friendly Plastics Conference. Speakers will talk about the technological development, the latest technology of bottle-to-bottle recycling and how manufacturers developed their business in China successfully. Exhibitors will also display many recycling equipments and technologies during the fair.
