Plastic materials with high heat resistance and high cooling ability are being sought by car makers along with the trends of lightweight and electric vehicles (EV).

Apart from energy-saving and low emission, lighter vehicles and EV being produced need to be able to withstand high temperature and high pressure.

When the engines are close together and tightened, there is a lot of heat building up, so materials that are strong enough to withstand temperature as high as 220°C are needed.

"In the power arena, the car industry faces the challenge of higher temperature and higher pressure. There is also an increasing need for new materials that improve weight-saving and productivity. The materials must also be affordable," said Franz Spitznagel, Senior Development Programs Manager of DuPont Performance Materials (DPM).

"Hybrid vehicles and fully electrical vehicles also brought challenges to the industry, which needs electro-friendly materials. We're working hard on new cooling mechanism for car battery," he said.

Spitznagel cited the recent explosion incidents of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 as example, saying that car batteries must be guarded against overheating.

"The case of Samsung was a serious one. The high energy density of the battery caused the phone in use to explode as the temperature went up to about 80°C," he explained.

"That's the challenge of the industry – to offer affordable battery cooling packages, in addition to lightweight, low consumption and low emission. We have engineers to think about how to make these happen," he said.

DPM has launched a range of new product lines for the automotive, wire & cable, and electric & electronics markets at K 2016. They included its latest halogen free grades, an expansion of its thermal conductive resins portfolio, a new electrically friendly polymer line, innovative rubbers for wire and cable compounders, and its latest high performance polymers for injection and blow molding processes.

DuPont Zytel FR 95G25 V0NH and DuPont Crastin FR684NH are DPM's latest halogen free grades. These solutions for electrical component applications offer high Comparative Tracking Index (CTI), long-term reliability, safety, and performing well at high temperatures.

To improve thermal management of Electric Components, DPM also developed a new thermal conductive polymer in the Zytel family. The new DuPont Zytel FR73200TC features high cooling abilities and design flexibility, enabling the creation of long-lasting devices.
