Engineering plastics, because of their superior mechanical and thermal properties, are one of the most common lightweight materials applied in automobiles. Radici Plastics recently introduced high performance Polyamide 66 materials specialized for components of car cooling systems.

Radici Plastics's PA 66 brand, the Radilon hydrolysis-resistance PA 66 range of products, caters for injection molding of cooling circuit components for engines. The recently presented Radilon A GV HO 30P sw E4 can be utilized under severe operating conditions, such as high temperatures and/or pressures. A typical example would be the thermostat housing right at the engine head.

According to Radici, tests done at end-user sites during the material approval process showed the time to charpy unnotched impact half life in a glycol/water mix at 130°C in the case of Radilon A GV HO 30P sw E4, is about 30% more compared with Radilon A RV300 RKC, a standard hydrolysis-resistant 30% glass fiber filled material used in the manufacture of cooling system components. On the other hand, it is 90% higher when compared to 30% glass fiber filled PA66.

Radici noted that a similar trend can also be seen in tensile strength. An increase in the ageing time needed to reach 50% of the initial property in glycol/water mixes translates into a proportional increase in the expected useful life of the component installed in a car, all operating conditions being equal. Other tests have shown the product with high glycolysis resistance behaves in contact with different liquids used for engine cooling at a temperature of 120°C, with ageing extended up to 3,000 hours.

Ageing extended up to 3,000 hours

Another test was carried out using an expansion tank filled with a cooling liquid (Havoline) with a vibration welded cover. Constant pressure of 3 bar was applied at 140°C, and the times to leakage were recorded until failure at the welding line. Results have confirmed that the Radilon A GV HO 30P sw E4 behaves like 33% glass fiber filled polyphthalamide (PPA) with enhanced hydrolysis resistance.

Radici also unveiled two other Radilon which round out the Gas Assisted Injection Molding (GIT) and Water Assisted Injection Molding (WIT) range, can be used for the manufacture of liquid cooling system hoses, the Radilon A RCV3015 RKC for GIT molding and Radilon WIT 30/28 for WIT molding.
