Several tip versions can be selected. Especially advantageous for the production of syringes or pipettes with highest requirements regarding dimensional accuracy is a version with 60°degree tip angle because it helps to eliminate core deflection caused by the melt pressure. Another product that is especially suitable for medical applications is the electric drive valve gate system with step-motor technology which is available in three sizes and can be combined with all standard nozzles. Because there is no potential contamination from lubricated compressed air, the system offers an unlimited suitability for clean room applications. Compared to electro-magnetic concepts the EWIKON step-motor technology gains advantages by allowing full control of the valve pin movement. All process parameters can be varied by the operator by using a external control unit that allows operation of up to 32 drives simultaneously. With only 30 W of power consumption for the largest version an energy-saving operation is ensured. A further advantages is a constantly high closing force which makes the step-motor drive suitable for processing of demanding, rapidly freezing materials like Polycarbonate where high closing forces are required for a proper gate sealing. As a unique feature the electric drive can access multiple valve pin positions within one molding cycle. This option considerably broadens the range of applications and offers new methods of resolution for injection molding applications, especially when considering the growing tendency to integrate additional functions into moulds. Several applications where the application requires the valve pin to move to three positions within the cycle have been realized so far. Industry Review Industry chain in plastics processing industry Dennis Duan, Senior Editor A sophisticated chart is still insufficient to illustrate the factors affecting the complete plastic industrial chain. In this article, we specifically examine those factors varying the chain in upstream, plastic processing, applications and recycling. Caption: Factors affecting the plastic industrial chain Upstream industry of plastics Plastic raw materials mainly come from byproducts or derivatives in the process of petroleum refining. Though technologies to synthesize raw materials from new sources such as degradable plastics and renewable plastics have become popular in the market while these materials have improved in performance, yet no single material currently available in market can compete with petrochemical-based materials in production capacity and performance. Therefore the price of petroleum is still the most important factor affecting the price of raw materials for the plastic industry. In 2008, the price for crude oil hiked the highest point in July which also led to the soaring of plastics raw material. While petrochemical suppliers were making huge profit, the plastic industry was faced with difficulty. Following the economic crisis in August 2008, market demand suffered from a steep decline, the price of crude oil per barrel dropped from more than US$140 to around US$30, likewise the price of raw material in China has also dropped from RMB 14,000~15,000 to RMB3,000~4,000. Material buyers who had paid advance payment were forced to cancel their order. No wonder some raw material distributors claimed that they have lost a year's profit in only two weeks. Downstream applications of plastics High-speed development of the plastics industry is inseparable from the development of the downstream sectors. After all, the development and technical upgrade of the plastics industry comes from greater demand by downstream sectors. Triggered by the need to reduce fuel consumption, the reduction of weight has become one of the key developments in automotive industry. Compared with metal, plastics has better weight/performance ratio. From the very beginning, the production of “all-plastics car” was only an unreachable dream. With continuous improvement in performance and successful development of new-type plastics, plastic application in autos has made breakthroughs. Today, for instance, conventional petrochemical materials and even renewable plastics can meet the needs of such applications as engine and peripheral components. To satisfy requirements and extend shelf life of products in medical and food packaging, new technologies such Chinaplas 2010 International Visitors' Guide
Industry Review as multilayer laminating technology, high-barrier technology and clean processing technology are developed. Triggered by the growing need in the high-end packaging market for attractive packaging, new molding technologies based on in-mold labeling (IML) and in-mold decoration (IMD) are finding more and more applications. The development of technologies in electronic/electric industry is triggered by increasing need to personalize product and shorter cycle of upgrade. This has triggered by the high-speed development of high-performance material and technologies represented by engineering plastics. The demand in the construction sector to reduce heat loss at doors, windows and glass components has triggered continuous development of plastic insulation materials. To improve flame-retardant property for conventional insulating materials and deal with flame-retardant and environmental protection issues, for example, it is necessary to set higher retardant standards and establish more rigorous market entry restrictions. Industrial chain cooperation and integration The plastics industry has achieved high-speed development in raw materials and equipment technology through close cooperation with downstream sectors. In the plastics industry, there are many examples of cooperation between plastic raw material and equipment enterprises, mold/component suppliers and end users. German injection molding machine supplier ARBURG once launched an injection production cell. The implementation of this automatic production cell is an example of successful cooperation in the industrial chain, involving overall cooperation from plastic material supplier to conductive plastics supplier, mold supplier, processor, injection machine manufacturer and end users, making it a one-step processing/molding production cell including sensitive materials and fully exhibiting the benefits of cooperation. On the other hand, plastic suppliers are also intensifying efforts to develop brand-new technologies to open up need for application markets, including applications where new plastic products are used to substitute metal components or other nonmetal components. We can find countless examples, such as electronic/electric products, in our everyday lives. Market performance is turning for the better. Interpenetration between upstream and downstream sectors is an important expression for industrial chain integration. For example, Taiwanese company Foxconn is not only one of the largest OEM manufacturers in the world, but also has launched a full range of proprietary brand electronic products. Similarly, many application manufacturers are also developing toward upstream sectors and beginning to develop various types of plastic components for internal use. In addition, they are developing towards other upstream sectors such as plastic materials, molds and even plastics machinery. Examples for application of industrial chain conception In an interview with a machine tool manufacturer, the author of this article was deeply impressed by the unique “Heat-friendly technology” used for their machining center. If similar technology is employed in injection molding machine such that the first molding process can produce conforming products, this may help improve product yield and substantially reduce energy consumption. Actually some enterprises, as shown by Japanese company NISSEI in IPF 2008, have successfully developed similar technology. Of course, internal energy-saving control for processors is an important process for the entire industrial chain. However, to ensure high-efficiency, low-consumption production in the production process, plastic processors should first look at the initial design and take price-affecting factors in the upstream sector into account, identify the performance of materials from upstream suppliers, identify the processing capacity of equipment and molds and specifically identify the needs of downstream customers. Recycling is an important process often neglected in the industrial chain. If we can consider firstly the recycling in the product design stage, we can avoid the difficulty in sorting waste materials to be recycled and avoid the dilemma of “criticism” for the plastics industry concerning environmental issues. Undoubtedly, social responsibility is also an important consideration for the plastic industrial chain. It is always important to consider social factors as early as possible in the plastic processing chain. Reproduced from Oct/Nov 2009 issue of China Plastic & Rubber Journal. Industry Review Safe and comfortable lifestyle thanks to TPE Dennis Duan, Senior Editor Nowadays higher functionality and better performance are not quite the only attributes demanded by product developers – The material's eco-friendliness and safety standards are also considered. Combining performance of both plastics and rubber, with soft touch and bright colorability TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is both safe to use and easy to process. With broadening applications TPE is meeting higher demand of safety and eco-friendliness, bringing comfortable lifestyle to people. Eco-friendliness and safety are main attributes TPE, a totally new material, combines the highly repeatable processability of plastics as well as elasticity of rubber, whereas its eco-friendliness is far superior to traditional soft PVC. Compared with rubber, TPE is easy and convenient to process, highly efficient and using remarkably less energy during production. TPE has become a new product with applications ranging from toys, automotive, medical device, tools, sealers and insulations. GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers, a PolyOne business and global leader in high-performance, custom-formulated thermoplastics elastomers (TPEs), announced recently a new family of halogen-free, flame-retardant (HFFR) TPEs that provide an alternative to traditional flexible vinyl jacketing and insulation for consumer electronics applications. GLS' new OnFlex TPE materials, designed for use in power cords for consumer electronics products, ensure a high level of safety and regulatory compliance as well as excellent performance and aesthetics. The new OnFlex portfolio of materials meets performance and regulatory requirements and provides exceptional visual and tactile aesthetics. All grades are made without the use of halogenated flame retardants and do not contain phthalates. They can also typically be processed on the same extrusion and injection molding equipment used for flexible PVC. Being able to meet high level of safety standard, TPE is a suitable material for medical devices. One of its major applications is to replace the use of traditional soft PVC. TPE supplier MOBIS at launched Mobiflex – a product grade that can satisfy medical requirement. This material has good weatherability, high transparency and softness, highly extensible as well as resistance to high temperature. Complying FDA's requirement and being highly transparent, Mobiflex also has outstanding electrical property. Mobiflex can be applied to medical devices, sport equipment, auto parts, wire and cables and other items. A material substitute of rubber, Mobiflex is 100% recyclable and require less cost to process. Using eco-friendly, renewable sources Besides eco-friendliness and safety, product developers are seeking TPE derived from renewable sources as they want to cut their energy bills. Some TPE products made of renewable sources have been commercialized successfully. Salomon, a leading supplier of sporting goods, has adopted Hytrel RS from DuPont for the collar of the company's new “Ghost” freerider alpine ski-boot. A key reason for the adoption, according to Salomon, was the availability of a renewably sourced alternative meeting the demanding performance requirements for winter sports equipment. We already knew Hytrel could deliver required performance. The fact that we could now access a grade with significant renewable content is an additional selling point for our boots, said Pascal Pallatin, research project manager at Salomon. Containing between 20~60% renewably Caption: GLS' new OnFlex TPE materials for use in power cords ensure a high level of safety and regulatory compliance. Chinaplas 2010 International Visitors' Guide
Industry Review sourced ingredients by weight, Hytrel RS elastomers are made using renewably sourced polyols derived from plant-based raw materials and are easily processed by conventional thermoplastic methods. Properties include excellent flex fatigue and flexibility at low temperatures and high impact resistance. TPE with outstanding processability Besides good mechanical property, TPE is preferred to rubber and soft PVC because of outstanding processability. Compared with rubber, the processing of TPE uses far less energy. With outstanding liquidity and adhesion performance, TPE material from KRAIBURG has been applied by Mennekes to two-color injection molding of connectors. TPE can be directly sprayed on the surface of PBT material of connectors—such working procedure replaces the time-taking, labor-consuming and costly manual assembly and Mennekes can save the production time and cost therefore. Compared with the connectors made with the general process, the directly injection-molded parts such as cover and seal ring at the front end of PowerTOP Xtra plug will not drop or lose. Assemblers can finish their works easily by means of connectors and the man-hour is reduced. The typical super-soft property of TPE material can deliver the optimum touch of hands and the users of industrial connectors can still seize the plug and socket firmly with their hands even in the poor working conditions such as humidity, ice and snow and stain. TPE's outstanding processability is also reflected on the making of films. ExxonMobil Chemical has introduced three new grades of Vistamaxx specialty elastomers, which high performance is ideal for film and fiber applications. Like all Vistamaxx specialty elastomers, these grades can be blended with polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), or used as interfacing layers with PE and PP structures, to deliver excellent tie layer and lamination performance. Offering very low seal initiation temperatures combined with high seal strength, they are ideal for use as a sealing layer in coextruded structures. Easy to process and available as free-flowing pellets, these Vistamaxx elastomers also offer good optical properties and good chemical resistance. Caption: Salomon has adopted Hytrel RS from DuPont for the collar of the company's new "Ghost" freerider alpine ski-boot. Overall improvement of China's TPE technology and applications China has seen the rapid development of TPE technology in recent years, whereas the local manufacturers, trade company and foreign investment companies are actively upgrading the TPE technology and application. The R&D engineers from Suzhou TPV company have spent three years to develop a new patent technology for manufacturing EPDM/PP TPE. TPV Company has achieved the crosslinking of TPE by means of reaction of silicon hydride radicals on polymethyl siloxane molecules with unsaturated double bonds on TPE molecules, with the presence of platinum catalyst and on the basis of the classic principle of addition reaction of organic hydrosilylation addition reaction. With such crosslinking, the working process will not produce any by-product or any substance with low molecular weight and the final products will be colorless and odorless. Additionally, the crosslinking speed and density can be controlled. Importing overseas technologies are one of the approaches to develop the domestic market. Chinese company Hersbit Chemical introduces the new-type elastomer Vistamaxx from ExxonMobil directly to the domestic market. Such elastomer is the transparent pellet and can be directly added, without secondary palletizing, consuming less energy, which is mostly applied to modify PP and other polymers. As a modifier, such elastomer can improve the polymers according to the added quantity so as to allow such polymers to have high elasticity, high transparency, high puncture resistance, anti-tearing and good low-temperature performance and very comfortable touch. ■ Reproduced from Aug/Sep 2009 issue of China Plastic & Rubber Journal Chinaplas 2010 International Visitors' Guide

Travel Information Country Pavilions At the Shanghai World Expo, visitors will be exposed to many country pavilions built in splendid designs. China China, the host nation of Shanghai World Expo, has built the Pavilion designed with the concept of “Oriental Crown”. After two years’ work the construction was completed on early February. Its main color is "Gugong (Forbidden City) Red" which represents the taste and spirit of Chinese culture. Its main structure includes a six-layer, 30-meter-high roof made of traditional wooden brackets. The 56 brackets symbolize the nation's 56 minority ethnic groups. Below the main structure, there is a 45,000-square-meter joint pavilion featuring displays from local provinces, cities and regions. The 160,000-square-meter pavilion will be converted into a museum for Chinese history and culture after the Expo closes. Germany The 6,000-square-meter structure is Germany's largest at any Expo and comprises three exhibition areas which showcase German urban life and how the country's design and products can help solve urbanization problems. The theme of the pavilion is "Balancity." It demonstrates the importance of balance between modernization and preservation, innovation and tradition, community and the individual, work and leisure, and between globalization and national identity. ■ Chinaplas 2010 International Visitors' Guide
