A record 13 country/region pavilions with exhibitors from around the world have formed a major part of CHINAPLAS. Thailand pavilion is participating for the first time ever, while some of the others are exhibiting in a larger scale than before. Korean pavilion, last seen in 2009, also returned to the show. The Taiwan pavilion ranks first in terms of exhibiting area, followed by German pavilion and Italian pavilion. Other pavilions include Austria, the UK, France, US, Canada, Turkey, Japan and China. The technologies they are introducing are wide-ranging, covering most areas of plastics processing for various application sectors. The British Plastics Federation has also brought a group of delegates to visit the show and learn about the vast opportunities that the Chinese market has to offer. Some international pavilion representatives we spoke to have identified the current demands of the growing markets and predicted the future development trends. For instance, Italian pavilion chose "maximising efficiency" as the theme of participation, and displays a wide range of automatic equipment for material preparation (drying, dosing, feeding etc.) and for recovering and recycling scraps and post-consumer articles. Among the numerous innovations are the new SACMI range of machines for caps production (up to 1,600 pieces/minute), thanks to the continuous compression molding technology, which reduces energy consumption by 25% (for the same volume produced) compared with the injection moulding technology. For example, it is estimated that the average energy consumption per cycle of a medium-sized injection molding machine has decreased by around 20% from 1995 to 2010,”Mr Celata explained. The pavilion comprises some 60 manufacturers from Italy, about 20% of them are attending for the first time. Mr Celata says that the wide presence of Italian manufacturers confirms the importance of the industrial cooperation between Chinese and Italian industries. Presently, Germany, France and China are the main destinations for Italian technology, while exports to Russia, Poland, and Turkey are on the rise. In terms of macro-areas, however, the main progress is seen in sales to the Far East, with China being the leader in growth. Also from Europe, Austria, one of the biggest pavilions, is embracing the huge potential of China market. A total of 17 Austrian companies are presenting their latest technologies, demonstrating their advancement in high technology, as well as their growing presence in China market. Christian Kiene, Project Manager of Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, points out that China is the most important overseas trade partner and the market is still growing in terms of production and consumption. Mr Kiene believes that in the next few years, development trends will focus on hybrid components, for example, mix of plastics with other materials such as metal and fiber. He highlights carbon fiber reinforced plastics, which is expected to play a bigger role in the future and bring benefits to the whole value chain: from tooling, materials, resins to machinery. Bioplastics is another area that will play a bigger role in various industries other than packaging, while emerging economies like the Middle East will become a major player, he says. Among the machinery shown are the plastics recycling plants, extrusion technology, injection molds, air and underwater pelletizing systems and solutions for packaging production. According to Raymund Gradt, Austria's Consul for Commercial Affairs, the Chinese plastics market in its current stage is faced with the challenges of technical innovation, energy preservation, brand image development and industrial modernization. Providers of plastics machines, components and system solutions that offer high level of quality, speed and precision, and are environmentally friendly, will be able to thrive in this“increasingly competitive market”. Appearing for the second time since last year, Turkey pavilion consists of 15 companies, nine of them are newcomers. Their presence spread across the raw materials and machinery halls. Products include polymers and additives, stabilizers, engineering plastics and fillers; as well as bag-making machines, screw and barrels, plastics recycling machines and granule-cutting machines. “Turkish companies are presenting their newest technologies to the world at CHINAPLAS 2012, where new markets will be opened up and Turkish companies will meet their worldwide clients,”comments Huseyin Semerci, President of the Plastic Industrialists Association (PAGDER) in Turkey and temporary president of the Turkish Plastics Industrialists Federation (PLASFED). Mr Semerci analyses the industry trend from a global perspective:“Although Europe is known as the heart of petro-chemistry, investments are shifting to places where there is oil and natural gas.” He sees a huge market potential in China.“China is an ever-growing market. The emphasis has been on export-oriented businesses until recently. In the coming years, we expect new investments targeting more and more the domestic demand.” He sums up:“Chinese and Western cultures are very different from each other. However, there are more similarities than differences between Chinese and Turkish business cultures. Thailand pavilion makes debut A warm welcome to the Thailand pavilion –Sawadee ka! New to CHINAPLAS, eight exhibitors from Thailand formed the first Thailand pavilion of CHINAPLAS. Their participation was made possible with the support of the Thai Department of International Trade Promotion. “This is the first time for Thailand to join CHINAPLAS and feedback is good. Thai companies have been receiving orders on the first day, with orders coming mostly from China and some from overseas visitors,”says Theeraphon Kowphatthanakit, Senior Trade Officer, Thailand Exhibition Section, Office of Export Promotion Activities, Department of International Trade Promotion of the Ministry of Commerce, The Royal Thai Government. Korean pavilion makes a comeback “Best Partner, Best Korea”is the theme of the Korean Pavilion, which has returned after three years. According to Jang Hyun Park, General Manager of Korea Petrochemical Industry Association, half of the 10 exhibitors of the pavilion are major petrochemical firms. Among these exhibitors, seven are exhibiting for the first time in CHINAPLAS. Mr Park says that one of the goals of this year's participation is to foster a harmonious development between Korea's petrochemical industry, which consists of mainly large enterprises, and its plastics industry, in which the companies are relatively small. Taiwan highlights mold industry A total of 62 companies from Taiwan take part in CHINAPLAS. Representative of the Taiwan Mold & Die Industry Association, Gao Liwu, says the industry would move towards the high precision, professional segment of the market, similar to the development path of Japan. Due to the lack of mega-enterprises, the direction is likely to be high quality but small quantity. “Plastics is a very important industry in Taiwan especially to Taiwan's economy,”comments Andy Hou, Specialist at the Business Division of the Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI). Analysing global demand, he says that China's demand for plastic products concentrates on daily consumer products such as household wares, packaging and bottling, whereas US and Europe demand more on high end consumer products such as cars and mobile phones.“Global demand is rising, but at different product levels.” Taiwan is the fifth largest producer of plastics and fourth largest plastics exporter in the world. Chang Chun Chemical, which exhibits for the first time in CHINAPLAS, is a good example. Apart from upgrading product quality, cost reduction is also a target to achieve by the products displayed to benefit various industries, such as electronics, home appliances, automotive, packing materials and so on. He is introducing the company's portfolio of white pigments and additives made in Germany and Finland to the Chinese plastics world.“We hope that within these four days we will reach a high number of customers and potential customers not only from China but also from the whole of Asia,”he said. This first-time German exhibitor is featuring extremely uniform titanium dioxide particles with blue hue as well as soft and white zinc sulphide particles for pigment or additive use. Used mainly in the food packaging industry, PVC compounders looking for durable TiO₂ and Masterbatchers looking for high dispersible TiO₂ with low lacing properties will find numerous benefits from the company's five decades of experience in producing TiO₂ and over 130 years of experience in producing zinc sulphide particles. “Sachtleben is producer of titanium dioxide using the demanding sulphate process. That allows producing anatase and rutile titanium dioxide grades,”he explained. A great number of experts have presented at the seminar, which concluded yesterday. For instance, Isao Inomata, Adviser of Japan BioPlastics Association (JBPA), gave a review on the current status of biomass-based plastics development in Japan and explained the BiomassPla Identification system implemented in Japan since July 2006. To pass the BiomassPla Identification system, he said, the material must be at least 25% bio-based measured by C14 measurement (ASTM D6866-05) and all components do not contain any non-usable material as defined by the association. Mr Inomata said that the number of registered products has been increasing steadily, from about 30 items in September 2007 to almost 200 in March this year. At present, over 60% of biomass-based polymers in Japan contain 25-50% bio-based raw material. Besides, more and more automobile parts are being produced with plastics, says Mr Inomata, as more bio-based polymers are being applied in Japan's cars. From floor mats, seat cushions to door scuff plate, auto-makers such as Honda, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Toyota, etc. are using bioplastics to various extents. Toyota, for example, has made most inner parts of its vehicles with biomass-based plastics. Mr Inomata concluded that the huge gaps in costs between petroleum-based plastics and biomass-based plastics would be narrowed as biochemistry develops and crude oil price continues to rise. He hopes that the material can help in preventing global warming. Another speaker, Dr Kenji Yao of the Marking Material Research & Technology Department at Fuji Xerox, talked about“The sustainability development of bio-based polymer in Fuji Xerox's applications”. Fuji Xerox has been developing bio-based plastics since 2004, with the first product produced in 2007 being a Poly Lactic Acid (PLA)/Polycarbonate (PC) alloy. Dr Yao said that the characteristics of PLA/PC alloy are similar to those of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) resin. There were two breakthroughs in bio-based PLA/PC alloy. First of all, plasticizer has been added to the PLA/PC alloy so that it is flame-retardant. Secondly, melt viscosities of both the PLA and PC are being controlled close to each other, resulting in good dispersion. Dr Yao also introduced“Inedible”, a new bio-based product debuted last year. Carrying a BiomassPla logo, it is 40% plant-based, he emphasized, and the new material does not compete with the food supply chain. However, the initial cost is seven to eight times higher than ABS resin. Due to the spindle type distribution, Inedible's weld strength and flame-resistance performance are enhanced. Manufacturers do not need to consider weld characteristics when designing components, compared with producing with ABS resin. Dr Yao says Fuji Xerox is planning to increase the variety of its BBP product series for more applications. The presentation of NatureWorks LLC, a pioneer in biopolymers production, is about“NatureWorks Ingeo and its latest application technologies”. 第十六頁（上接第09頁）聚乳酸應用潛力大、助環保隨著原油的短缺、石油價格的巨幅波動、及石油化學工業造成的空氣污染及溫室效應，生物基的聚合物備受關注，尤其是聚乳酸(PLA)。它是由澱粉或糖發酵生成，不需以石油為原料，在堆肥條件下可以生物降解、回歸自然。它是第一個大規模工業化的綠色環保塑料，在成本上比許多類似的生物基或生物降解塑料有競爭力。在昨日的“國際生物塑料應用研討會”上，深圳市光華偉業實業有限公司技術經理張向南的演講題目是“PLA合金及其應用技術”。他指出，近年來生物塑料作為一種新材料的快速發展。PLA這種新材料具有生物降解特性，是一種資源可再生的低碳材料，與傳統石油基材料在一定程度上可優勢互補。 “PLA可以應用於耐用材料，與其它塑料材料製成一種新的合金材料，達到性能優化，降低成本，節約資源的目的。”他說。這次的演講向觀眾介紹了改性PLA品種之一的PLA合金，主要分為“PLA完全生物高分子材料合金”和“PLA不完全生物高分子材料合金”兩類。前者主要有：PLA/PBS、PLA/PHA、PLA/PCL、PLA/澱粉、PLA/PA等合金系列。這些合金材料中其它組分也是一種生物高分子材料，因此保持了原有生物材料低碳、環保特點。後者則是指組成共混體系的另一組分不是高分子材料，因此這類合金材料不但低碳環保，還兼具了其它非生物高分子材料的性能特點；這類合金材料主要有：PLA/ABS、PLA/PC、PLA/PMMA、PLA/PP、PLA/POM等合金系列。另外，普拉克中國（席世瑪生物化工產品貿易有限公司）大中華區聚乳酸總經理甄光明博士的演講題目是“耐高溫聚乳酸在纖維及高端產品中的應用”。他介紹說，聚乳酸主要來源於植物，澱粉糖中，可以很方便的降解，實現碳迴圈。普通的塑料降解時間則很長，有的甚至要達到200~300年。市面上的第一代聚乳酸都不耐高溫，價格較貴，同時機械和物理性能也比不上傳統的塑料；這使它們的應用被限制在低端產品上，如食品包裝及一次性塑料等。最近工業化的D乳酸和D型丙交酯，以及其它共聚、結晶、改性、加工等技術，均可望提高聚乳酸的機械和耐熱性能，促進它在高端市場的應用。甄博士補充說，聚乳酸的大量使用，在短期內仍有賴政府法規的保護和鼓勵，但長遠市場看好，到2020年，聚乳酸市場很可能會超過百萬噸。 (Continued from P9) Dan Sawyer, Managing Director, Asia Pacific, NatureWorks LLC, says that the company targets to make Ingeo structurally less expensive than PS and PET resins by 2015. As data in the first quarter this year shows, when petroleum price was at US$103/barrel, PS was valued at US$1.05/lb while PET was US$0.9/lb. Meanwhile, corn-based Ingeo resin was selling at US$0.95/lb when corn was valued at US$6/bushel. Opposers of bioplastics claimed that the material would compete with human food chain and push up food prices, but Mr Sawyer disagrees. He says that Ingeo, in the future, will gradually shift from corn-based to less carbon source materials like sugar cane and cassava, and ultimately cellulosics. Last year, 50% of NatureWorks'ownership has been acquired by the Thailand-based PTT Global Chemicals (PTTGC). With the plan to build its second Ingeo production plant in Thailand, NatureWorks expects to manufacture a total of 220,000 tons of biopolymer annually by 2015. According to Mr Sawyer, the new generation of compounded Ingeo grades is flexible and can be tailored for various applications.“The lactic acid based polymers, and the succinic acid based polymers are at opposite ends of the spectrum, and that most of the other oil-based plastics fall somewhere in between. According to the organizer, Adsale Exhibition Services Ltd., many of the exhibitors this year have confirmed their participation in CHINAPLAS 2013, which is expected to attract a great number of visitors, particularly from the southern part of the country and from around the world. It is estimated that the total exhibition area of CHINAPLAS 2013 would occupy 220,000 sqm of floor space at the China Import & Export Fair Pazhou Complex; about 2,800 exhibitors from 35 countries / regions, which make CHINAPLAS Asia's No. 1 and the world's No. 2 plastics and rubber trade exhibition. The rise in demand for the services provided by CHINAPLAS over the past decades went hand-in hand with the development of China's plastics and rubber industry, which has been growing constantly, creating a huge market for the plastics technology providers worldwide. Guangdong, being the largest province in South China, ranks first in China's plastic product output, and its size has surpassed Japan and the European countries, despite the fact that it is undergoing gradual changes owing to the rising labour cost. China's growth figures According to figures released by the China Plastics Processing Industry Association, output of plastic products in China last year, the first year of China's 12th Five-Year Plan, soared by 22.35% compared with 2010 to reach 54.743 million tons. During the same year, the rubber products industry in China made a profit of RMB40 billion, an increase of 20.68%. The eastern, southern and central regions of China produced the largest amounts of plastic products, accounting for 42%, 26% and 9% of total national output respectively. By provinces, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Guangxi were the most productive, having yielded 20%, 15.5% and 7.2% respectively. 　　 Reflecting market trends As a representative event in the global plastics and rubber industry being held in the important market of China, CHINAPLAS has been organizing a variety of concurrent events that respond to the current needs and directions of the industry, such as the events under the theme of green plastics in 2011, the last Guangzhou edition, as well as the theme dedicated to creative design this year in Shanghai.
