What are the most important functions of beverage caps? Sealing performance and safety come to mind. They must also be easy to open, with good weatherability and impact resistance.

Sumitomo (SHI) Demag is one of the leaders in caps and closure technology. Alan Min, Key Account Packaging, Shanghai Office of Demag Plastics Machinery (Ningbo) Co. Ltd. discussed the latest trends in packaging with CPRJ.

CPRJ: Demag places huge emphasis on packaging application. So what are the current market trends?

Mr. Min: As an established German plastics machinery brand, we are the first injection molding machinery supplier in Europe to have formed a division dedicated to packaging half a century ago. Our scope of packaging applications covers food, cosmetics, industrial chemicals, agriculture and gardening, etc.

After years of developments, Demag has transformed itself from a machinery supplier to a system solutions provider. Thin-walled molding, In-mold Labeling (IML), multi-cavity stack molding, and co-injection of high barrier materials are the current trends in the market.

Our efficient, energy saving packaging solutions contribute not only to our customers' success, but also play an important role in social responsibility – to achieve the highest possible eco-friendliness.

CPRJ: What requirements are packaging companies looking for in their injection molding machines?

Mr. Min: Packaging technology keeps evolving. Nowadays, the packaging design is more complex, the weight is lighter, the walls getting thinner, etc. Apart from that, more processors are interested in importing large cavity molds (96-128 up) from Europe for improving efficiency and upgrading products.

As you may know, an injection mold is expensive. Therefore mold protection technology is of huge importance here. Particularly for packaging products, we are talking about an injection cycle of 1.6-5.5s, plus the use of high speed robots to pick the products from the side.

In this end, Demag offers the activeQ systems for sensitive monitoring of the clamping unit's travel forces both during mold opening and closing. If required, the module will actively stop the movements in order to protect the mold from potential damage. The reaction time is less than 1/10000 second.

CPRJ: Demag's El-Exis series injection molding machines are widely adopted in plastics packaging. Can you explain what makes it so special?
Demag's El-Exis series injection molding machines are widely adopted in plastics packaging.
Mr. Min: El-Exis is a high speed injection molding machine series developed specifically for high cavity production. Over the past 18 years, the Made in Germany El-Exis machines have been continually upgraded. Nowadays, over 2,000 machines have already been installed by manufacturers of thin-walled plastic packaging, screw caps and a broad variety of closures.

In summary, the advantages of EL-Exis include:

1. Reinforced machine engineering, making it more reliable, accurate and stable. More importantly, the linear guidance system of the moving mold platen reduces both the energy consumption and wear on the mold.

2. We have our own barrel research and production center to develop optimized product for individual solution. Independent electric screw drive is used for the injection unit.

3. EL-Exis is suitable for parallel functions. The machine properties can be self-optimized to achieve highest possible productivity.

4. Fast, more sensitive mold opening and closing because of the independent electric drive of the clamping unit.

5. Intelligent mold protection systems to eliminate risks of damaging the mold.

6. Hybrid drive concept ensures high energy efficiency – energy consumption of each kg of material is about 0.5-0.7Kwh.
