Circular economy is the new vision for the plastics industry. In sight of this, AdsaleCPRJ.com conducted a survey aiming at understanding the development of recycling and circular economy in China, as well as the industry professionals' views on these topics.

The online survey received valid feedback from a total of 1,140
respondents who are working in different sectors in China, including Automotive (21.43%), Packaging (15.27%), Medical (20.57%), E&E (13.68%), Construction (12.51%), Material suppliers (11.33%), Machinery manufacturers (3.44%) and others (1.77%).

According to the survey results, 97.02% of the respondents said they had been keeping tabs on the market and technology developments of circular economy, showing that circular economy is a matter of serious concern to the Chinese market. Meanwhile, the respondents rated for “the importance of circular economy for the Chinese plastics industry” and the average was 8.89 marks (out of 10 marks).

In addition, the survey also examined whether the enterprises in China support circular economy with actions. From the results, 86.58% of the respondents said their enterprises were already using recycling equipment in the plants.

For those who did not use recycling equipment, the main reasons were Insufficient understanding of the technology” (41.33%), “High cost” (29.08%) and “Unnecessary” (21.43%).

In the survey, 85.61% of respondents said their enterprises were using recycled/bio-based materials. For those who did not do so, itwas mainly because Insufficient understanding of the technology” (36.36%), “High cost” (29.44%) and “Unnecessary” (19.05%). Some of them said it was due to “The constraints of related regulations” (12.99%).

Promising potential for the recycling market

Meanwhile, 93.77% of the respondents unveiled that their enterprises would consider increasing investment in recycling, reflecting the high growth potential of the market.

The respondents also believed that the implementation of recycling and circular economy would bring numerous benefits to their enterprises, in terms of “Execution of corporate sustainability” (38.75%), “Reduction of resource costs” (26.83%), “Meeting customer expectations” (22.94%) and “Development of new product market” (10.62%).

Moreover, 94.82% believed that the successful development of circular economy in China would bring business opportunities for both domestic and overseas firms.

To enhance social awareness and improve supply chain

The survey shed lights on the challenges for developing circular economy in China as well. Most respondents thought Lack of awareness of the public” was the biggest challenges (34.48%). “Incomplete supply chain” (21.60%) was another key challenge.

Some respondents also provided some suggestions to deal with these challenges. For example, the government may promote the awareness to save resources, and set up reward and punishment systems; the plastics industry may establisha more comprehensive resource sharing platform.

When commenting on the outlook of the Chinese recycling industry, Michael Sheng, Secretary-General of China Resource Recycling Association Replas Branch said that many state-owned as well as listed enterprises have entered the market since two years ago.

For example, the state-owned China Gezhouba Group Co. Ltd. (中国葛洲坝集团有限公司) invested RMB 2 billion to establish the China Gezhouba Group LvyuanTechnology Co. Ltd. (中国葛洲坝集团绿园科技有限公司) in Shenzhen. The company focuses on developing recycling technologies, water management, etc., and has developed well, he added.

He also remarked that many Chinese recycling enterprises have developed new equipment and technologies, and the exposure of these developments will help to promote social awareness of the importance of recycling and circular economy.
