PackSys Global, a member of the Brückner Group, presented its latest innovations for packaging at K 2019 in Düsseldorf, Germany.

One of the highlights this year was the new line concept for single-origin packaging solutions. “The main focus of what we do this year is on mono-material structure,” said Helmut Huber, COO, Brückner Maschinenbau.

Today’s problem is that when laminating layers of different materials, it’s not easy to recycle. So to obtain future products which are recyclable, we developed new machine lines that can produce both BOPE (biaxially oriented polyethylene) and BOPP films. We tested the production of new film types in our pilot projects,” said Huber.

Mono-material film with superior mechanical and optical properties will be able to substitute previous multi-layer films made from different materials. These are ideal for the use in new, single-origin packaging and guarantee good sortibility in waste separation and optimal recycling.

A lot of discussion in the past days with our customers was about the subject of polyethylene, nearly everyone coming to the booth asked us for their new product. There were not as much discussion a few months ago but now it’s a hot topic. So far as we understand, this is the most discussed item at the moment. We’re expecting the first orders of the new line within the coming half year,” Huber illuminated.

This new technique
was demonstrated at the K show on PackSys Global’s LTR2 side-seamer. The NEOSeam produces decorated cosmetic laminate tubes.

At the show, NEOSeam was combined with PackSys Global’s focus on the use of large diameter tubes to replace extrusion blow molded plastic bottles. Many brand owners use plastic bottles for larger volume packs however these come with an environmental cost.

NEOSeam technology gives the advantage of low-cost, high-quality printing and more flexibility,” pointed out Thomas LeFevre, Director of Sales and Marketing, PackSys Global. “If you make a plastic bottle, you can make it in one size, but if you make a laminate tube, you can make a short, medium or long one. For brand owners, it gives them the opportunity to put an extra 10% into the product without having to make any capital investment whatsoever.”

Plastic bottles commonly use between 12 and 40% more plastic than a tube which holds the same volume. PackSys demonstrated production of 60mm diameter tubes which are suitable for pack size of 250ml to 400ml using NEOSeam.

With the aesthetics of NEOSeam combined with the substantial weight reduction in plastic, it is expected to see many products change from bottles to tubes using NEOSeam technology.

If you look at a tube in your house, very often you’d see a small white line on the side – the seam. With NEOSeam, we can put the seam on the tube right in the middle matching the design so you have no white line. The tube is highly breakage resistant as well. You can reduce the weight and 20% of plastics if you change from polyethylene to polypropylene, especially for large containers,” said LeFevre.
