Stäubli SMED technology realizes the integrated automatic operation of mold changing by One Click.

The Industry 4.0 injection molding cell going to be demonstrated by Stäubli at CHINAPLAS 2017 represents the future of injection molding.

The solution served by Stäubli is competent to manage increasingly diverse plastics production with concomitantly smaller batch sizes and to realize the integrated automatic operation by One Click, thereby maximizing production efficiency.

The demo cell on display will be a step-by-step presentation of this technology. The demonstration begins with the preheating of molds and other preparation steps, of which the process is implemented in the meantime of the ongoing production. All the transportations of medium, power and signal could be realized with Stäubli multi-coupling system by One Click.

In addition, the Industry 4.0 integration capability of the connection technology reveals obvious advantages as well: thanks to the integrated sensor module, the connectors are able to detect the conditions of molds and to send the feedback data to the subsequent process. Therefore, any error, such as a failure to reach the correct operating temperature, could be recognized and avoided at the primary stage.

The concrete operating process of this system is as follows:
- Transfer Mold B to the mold changing table and press the START button to start the mold preheating step;
- Once the predetermined temperature of mold has been attained, a signal is sent to the station to stop preheating, meanwhile the injection press stop working, the press side of automatic multi-coupling plate disconnects with the mold side and the power circuit is cut off;
- Then the mold changing table starts to work and implement the position switchover of Mold A and Mold B;
- The press side of automatic multi-coupling plate connects with the mold side and the power circuit is turned on, at the same time a signal is sent to the tool changer to let Stäubli robot start to automatically change the picking tool.
- In the end, the injection press starts to manufacture Product B.

The smooth implementation of the whole system requires high accuracy and stability of cure components:
- Automatic multi-coupling plate integrates all power circuits, using flat-face non-spill couplings for both water and oil circuits; electrical couplings with Multilam technology possess the minimum contact resistance and the self-cleaning function; the unique floating connection technology allows the error range of 0.5˚ and of +/-2mm, besides the number of connection cycles is more than a million. Not only the instant connection but the cleanness of plant could be confirmed.
- Based on three-phase asynchronous motor as the driver, dual station mold changing table is used to convey molds. When the table is moving, the high precision of coding (0.1mm) and the levelness (0.1mm/m) guarantee the correct operation of tables. The central positioning method of molds has no requirement of backplane width, which eliminates the reconstruction cost of molds.
- The circular magnetic cell of magnetic clamping system use NdFeB as material, of which the magnetic force is up to 0.625T every Ø60mm, and the operation interface could supervise magnetic intensity and manage mold database. Furthermore, the detachable mold design allows the maintenance on site.
- Picker robot is the unique robot with the highest speed and accelerated speed on the market, which needs only 0.8 second to demold during the whole 4s of production cycle.
- Robotic tool changer with built-in anti-disconnection mechanism could guarantee the stable production and its modular design allows the maintenance on site. The radial positioning tolerance of this device is +/-2mm.

Stäubli SMED technology diminish the mold changing time of more than 95%, simplify the operating process, expand the processing capacity of device, improve considerably the mold changing efficiency and decrease the risk of accident to the utmost extent.
