McLaren Automotive, the British supercar maker, is readying its McLaren Composites Technology Centre (MCTC) which will start producing carbon fibre tubs from 2019.

The £50million MCTC, located at the Advanced Manufacturing Park in Rotherham, is nearing completion and is the result of an on-going partnership between McLaren and the University of Sheffield’s Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC).

The MCTC will be home to McLaren’s second production facility when open, and the first ever outside of its native Woking. The facility is said to save around £10m for McLaren compared to the outsourced processes it uses today.

When fully operational, around 200 people will work at the MCTC. Over 40 McLaren employees are already housed at the AMRC, where they are working in partnership to advance the process for creating the lightweight carbon fibre Monocage structures at the heart of McLaren cars.

McLaren celebrated the laying of the concrete floor and the mounting of an illuminated sign on the front, with the new Senna recently unveiled.

The iconic McLaren F1 was the world’s first road car built with a carbon fibre chassis, and every car built more recently by McLaren has the same. Creating a facility where the supercar maker can manufacture its own carbon fibre chassis structures is therefore a logical next step, according to Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive.

Mike Flewitt also commented that the partnership with the AMRC allows "access to some of the world's finest composites and materials research capabilities".
