As the world moves away from the traditional Linear Economy of “take, make, dispose” mode of production to embrace the Circular Economy, recycling enters the spotlight which is demonstrated in real time at EREMA’s exhibition booth.

Commenting on the trend, Michael Heitzinger, CEO of EREMA Engineering Recycling Maschinen und Anlagen Ges.m.b.H, said, “If you look at current developments, not only the recycling industry is transforming, but the entire plastics industry. This rethinking in the industry is strongly influenced by the circular economy concept, which ascribes recycling to an essential role in closing the product cycle. This of course means a great opportunity for the recycling sector.”

Live operation of EREMA’s patented extruder system INTAREMA TVEplus demonstrates the recycling of materials that are difficult to process, such as heavily printed films and very moist materials. This is made possible through ultrafine filtration, thorough melt homogenisation and high-performance degassing in a single step.

Visitors can witness production wastes of Big Bag container bags made of polypropylene being processed into high-quality recyclates - directly and without pre-shredding.

Michael Heitzinger added that TVEplus technology has set new standards using the proven principle of melt filtration, which takes place upstream of extruder degassing. As a result, end products can be produced with the best quality and the highest possible recyclate content.

China: great potential in plastics recycling

Speaking of China, he is confident that the potential of plastics recycling can be tapped even further. For example, the amount of unwashed scrap film with paper labels from commercial waste, HDPE from household waste, or WEEE waste in China is high. Current developments in terms of increased investment in the expansion of sorting and collection systems are also encouraging.

With regard to cost-effectiveness and sustainability, he believes that it makes sense to use high-performance recycling technologies which can make valuable secondary raw material, i.e. recyclates, even out of heavily contaminated input.

Opportunities abound

Looking ahead, the potential of plastics recycling can be further explored as EREMA relies on sophisticated recycling technology to increase recyclate quality and automation.

According to Michael Heitzinger, technically, EREMA strives for maximum quality in the production of recycled materials. As for the qualitative improvement of regranulates, EREMA has launched several technical innovations last year alone: the ReFresher for odor-optimized regranulates or the QualityOn package for color and MVR measurement highlight EREMA’s dedication to quality.

In addition to quality, the automation of machines and the associated process optimization and traceability are a major lever for the recycling industry. The market launch of the re360 Manufacturing Execution System, a software program that allows recyclers and producers to keep an overview of their entire machine park, marked a good start for the industry to the path of success.

Joint industrial efforts is crucial

Michael Heitzinger pointed out that recycling cannot function on its own. Communication within the plastics industry is key to success. “I’d like to compare a functioning circular economy in the plastics industry with the symbol of gear wheels. The integration of recycling into the existing process chain is only possible through communication - from product design to production. We are not exempted from the necessary active communication either: the extrusion process, the core competence of EREMA, cannot be detached from sorting or washing, nor from the desired end use of recyclates,” he reiterates.
