Breyer has had fantastic business years in China, in particular when the leading extrusion lines manufacturer sold many lines for the production of backlight sheets for display monitors and flex screens.

However, the backlight sheets market is now saturated and corresponding technology has been changed. Therefore, Breyer has been strategically developing machines to meet the latest demand in the Chinese market with focus on a portfolio consisting high-end optical, electronic and automotive applications.

“Now, a very hot and interesting product for us and for the Chinese market is the battery film, for example, films used in the lithium ion batteries for electric cars,” explained Rainer Hespeler, Director Strategic Sales, Breyer GmbH Maschinenfabrik, in the interview with CPRJ.

Breyer expects a very strong performance in the battery films application in China as the electrc vehicles market is rapidly growing in China.

In order to unlock the potential, the manufacturer introduced special calendering equipment for such films. With the equipment, more compression power can be put on the films so that the batteries can have more capacity.

Reinforcement makes sense
Fiber-reinforced thermoplastic tape produced by TapeFlex extrusion line.
Composites possess a wide range of excellent characteristics, including light weight and extreme stability. They are on the rise in many applications which are exposed to extreme stress, such as aerospace and automotive.

Fiber-reinforced thermoplastic tapes provide reinforcement where the stress is particularly high. They can be produced in various material combinations and are particularly flexible in use.

The newly developed TapeFlex extrusion line from Breyer was designed for the economical production of high quality unidirectional fiber-reinforced thermoplastic tapes.

The tapes from the TapeFlex extrusion lines are strong and flexible, and the surfaces are smooth due to calendering process. In addition, various fiber types such as carbon, glass, aramid, natural fibers, etc. can be processed. As thermoplastics, for example PA, PP, ASA can be used.

“We see a big chance in this market. We are developing tapes up to 600 mm width and also for thermoforming, so that complete thermoforming parts can be made out of these composite tapes,” added Rainer Hespeler.

The complete extrusion line includes package creel, spreading unit, impregnating tool, extruder, calendar, cooling section and winder.

Quality ambition that helps

Thanks to the ambition of the Chinese customers in improving product quality, the business in China of Breyer has been picking up considerably in the last two years, according to Rainer Hespeler.

“With the promotions of the last Five-Year Plan, Chinese producers wanted big quality improvements. It helped us and other European machine manufacturers to become successful in China. As higher quality is needed, we are the right partners,” he commented.

Breyer machines are made in Germany, and 90% of the products are for export. To the company, Asia is a very important market which accounts for nearly 50% of the sales. Its branch in China also serves as a hub for servicing customers in other Asian countries.

“For services, we have a target to have more digital connections with our customers. We share data of the lines in cloud with our customers to make the lines more efficient and also reduce down time,” added Rainer Hespeler.
