13 organizations hosted the first annual event “The EU Plastics Industries – Towards Circularity”.

13 organizations from the entire plastics value chain hosted their first annual event “The EU Plastics Industries – Towards Circularity” on Dec 11 in Brussels, and presented the status of their voluntary commitments and pledges in front of the media, NGOs and representatives of the European Commission.

The various speakers had one common message: The European plastics industry and value chain are embracing the circular economy and have developed an extensive and ambitious set of voluntary measures to close the loop for plastics. All commitments will be monitored and the industry is ready to work closely together with authorities and other stakeholders to ensure the goals are reached.

As said, the achievement of the ambitious sustainability targets depends not only on the industry but requires the support of national authorities, European legislators and consumers alike. More collection and better sorting are needed to increase recycling and incorporate more recyclate into new products.

Some industry representatives also took the opportunity to warn against the negative impacts of the proposed single-use plastics Directive on businesses and employment in the European Union, not to mention possible unintended negative environmental impacts.

Presentations were made by the International Association for Soaps, Detergents and Maintenance Products (A.I.S.E.), European Carpet and Rug Association (ECRA), European Disposables and Nonwovens Association (EDANA), European Federation of Bottled Water (EFBW), European Manufacturers of Expanded Polystyrene (EUMEPS), European Plastics Converters (EuPC), Polyolefin Circular Economy Platform (PCEP), PET Sheet Europe, Petcore Europe, PlasticsEurope, Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS), and VinylPlus.

The event “The EU Plastics Industries – Towards Circularity” will be organized on an annual basis to guarantee an open and public reporting and transparent dialogue with stakeholders on the industry’s progress.

New Chairman of the PCEP confirmed

David Baker was confirmed as Chairman of the Polyolefin Circular Economy Platform (PCEP).Meanwhile, during the event, David Baker, RPC Group Industry Affairs Director, was confirmed as Chairman of the Polyolefin Circular Economy Platform (PCEP). He succeeds Eugenio Longo, Borealis Head of Sustainability and EU Affairs, who had been the Chairman of PCEP since its inception.

“I am delighted to take on this important role. Polyolefins are a significant part of the plastics family and PCEP will ensure polyolefins become increasingly circular. My short term focus will be to support the PCEP Steering Board in its drive to expand its membership to include brand-owners/EPR schemes, retailers and waste management companies in addition to producers, converters and recyclers,” said David Baker.

David Baker has over 35 years’ experience in the plastics packaging industry. He is also the Chairman of the Industry Council for Packaging and the Environment (INCPEN). He is also active in the Council of the British Plastics Federation (BPF) and Vice President of the European Plastics Converters (EuPC).

Polyolefins account for 50% of the total amount of plastics consumed in Europe and 70% of plastic packaging representing 40% of European plastics demand application wise.

27 million tonnes of post-consumer plastic waste were collected in Europe in 2016 from which about 16 million tonnes are polyolefins and 12 million tonnes are polyolefins packaging waste.
