Automotive manufacturing: cutting-edge technologies under spotlight

The rapid emergence of electric, intelligent and networked vehicles is revolutionizing the automotive sector. At CHINAPLAS 2019, a series of high-tech solutions for this evolving sector were shown, including materials and production technologies for interiors and exteriors of vehicles.

The AKXY concept electric vehicle (EV) presented by Asahi Kasei caught the eyes of many visitors. The concept EV uses a wide variety of Asahi Kasei materials, products and integrated systems, numbering 27 products in all. Most of them are available for adoption in mass-produced vehicles, such as engineering plastics to replace metal and enable weight reduction.

The two-seat concept EVs developed by BASF in collaboration with the Research and Development Center of Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. Ltd. were attractions as well. These models adopt several of BASF’s innovative materials and solutions, have a futuristic design, and are tailor-made for Chinese car owners with diversified lifestyles.

High-tech medical plastics unlock market potential

As the medical plastics market continues to grow and develop, more key suppliers of silicone rubber, bio-safe resins and new polymers that offer high-grade properties and biocompatibility were on show, reflecting the market potential.

Medical Plastics Connect comprised “Medical Plastics Forum”, “Pop-up Kiosk”, “Medical Plastics Guidebook” and “Medical Plastics Guided Tour”.

The Medical Plastics Forum, which has earned good reputation, covered a number of technologies and end products that are in demand, including biocompatible materials, polymer materials for medical consumables, innovative self-lubricating liquid silicone rubber, polyurethane products for high-risk medical devices, ultrasonic welding, 3D printing, and more.

The Medical Plastics Forum discussed hot technology and market trends.

A wealth of cutting-edge solutions for the packaging sector

The packaging sector is facing increasingly higher user requirements and strong call for sustainability. CHINAPLAS 2019 had a large display of innovative packaging solutions featuring live machine demonstrations as well as exhibits of innovative materials and green technologies.

For example, ILLIG’s new IC-RDM 73K thermoformer produced drinking cups using a 32-up mold, at a speed of 50 cycles per minute. The forming area of this new machine is enlarged by 23%. Subject to applications, all improvements together contribute to an up to 25% increased production.

Innovative material and chemical solutions also boost the developments of the packaging sector, satisfying the higher requirements from consumers. Milliken’s Millad NX 8000 PP clarifying agent is one of these solutions. The agent allows products with higher thickness to be as crystal clear as glass or amorphous polymer materials. It can replace the expensive transparent materials with limited functionalities and improve the aesthetics of current polypropylene materials.

Shaping circular economy for plastics

Plastics are gaining wider applications in different sectors, but only 9% of the world's plastics ever produced have been collected for recycling. Circular economy, as a megatrend of the plastics industry, is therefore under the spotlight at CHINAPLAS 2019.

A contract signing ceremony was held at CHINAPLAS 2019 on May 22 between Guolong Recyclable Resources Group and five renowned European suppliers of plastics recycling technology, including Sorema, Erema, SML, Kiefel and Tomra. The total value of the equipment purchased exceeded 30 million euros.

On May 20, Adsale Exhibition Services Ltd. and CPRJ - China Plastics and Rubber Journal jointly held the "Plastics Recycling & Circular Economy Conference and Showcase", and received an overwhelming response from the industry.

The conference welcomed over 450 experts and professionals from renowned enterprises and organizations.

The conference gathered from all around the world the latest innovations, improvements in processes, application examples, unique perspectives and insightful viewpoints regarding the circular economy and recycled plastic materials.

Recyclers and users of recycled materials (including retailers and brands such as Adidas, Johnson & Johnson, Nestle, Procter & Gamble, and Tupperware) shared case studies on how to establish a circular recycling ecosystem and discussed the entire life cycle of plastic materials.

The next edition of CHINAPLAS will be moving to Shanghai, running from April 21 – 24, 2020. See you next year!
