At K 2019, trade fair visitors can see live demonstrations of how KraussMaffei machines can upcycle a polypropylene bucket into a car's A-pillar.
At K 2019, trade fair visitors can see live demonstrations of how KraussMaffei machines can upcycle a polypropylene bucket into a car's A-pillar.

The Munich-based plastic machinery group KraussMaffei uses K 2019 to showcase its new, single brand KraussMaffei. The company underpins its “Pioneering Plastics” claim by presenting solutions for the circular economy, digitalization and new technologies.

Visitors of the trade fair are able to experience KraussMaffei's new corporate design for the first time.

Largest investment project in company's history

KraussMaffei’s listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange was occurred through the transfer of ChemChina's stake in KraussMaffei to ChemChina's majority-owned subsidiary THY.

With the support from ChemChina, KraussMaffei has kicked off four projects to modernize its operations on a global scale. The company is currently planning or building modern state-of-the-art production facilities in Munich/Parsdorf, Hannover/Laatzen, Einbeck (Burgsmüller) and Jiaxing/China.

Satisfying the demands of circular economy

As a pioneer in the recycling, upcycling and recompounding of plastics, KraussMaffei is strongly committed to building a circular economy for plastic materials, guided by the claim “PioneeringPlastics”, emphasized Frank Stieler, CEO.

The online marketplace Polymore goes live at K 2019. The aim of the platform is to better connect compounders and plastics processors and to make plastics trading more transparent.

Polymore combines the possibilities of digital with the advantages of the analog world, with personal contact an important element of the platform. Technical experts help determine users’ needs in material inquiries and match them with suitable partners in an international network.

The aim of Polymore is to better connect compounders and plastics processors and to make plastics trading more transparent.

The digital venture rounds out KraussMaffei’s offer of modern, sustainable plastics production. In
addition to being a source of compounds and recyclates, the platform also allows users to trade post-industrial recyclables, which form an important basis for the production of recyclates.

Polymore was introduced for the first time at Composites Europe in September, where it already awakened the interest of numerous plastics processors. Already, the platform boasts a network of 19 compounders and recyclers offering their materials for sale, and has fielded more than 100 material inquiries and offers of post-industrial recyclables.

Closing the gap for digitalization

At the fairgrounds, KraussMaffei is presenting the new easyTrace data collection system at the K 2019 trade show. This new modular system acts as an interpreter between machines of different generations, types, brands and instruments.

It gathers all relevant production data in plastics processing and transfers them to the specific customer systems for evaluation, whether from the extruder, injection molding machine, automation or peripherals.

The new easyTrace collects all relevant production data and transmits these to customer-specific systems for evaluation.

EasyTrace thus acts as a central data hub between the individual levels of production, creates more transparency over the entire value chain and thus supports quality assurance.

All state-of-the-art machines communicate with their production environment. They log their manufacturing sequences and provide the information at the proper time for the respective cycle for further processing—whether for the downstream system in the process or for central evaluation. However, the various protocols are not always fully compatible.

Making all data available together for evaluation, for example by an MES system, is essential, particularly in the age of Industry 4.0. These systems should be as simple as possible and not overloaded with powerful IT systems. However, they are not adequately tailored to plastics processing. In response to requests from customers, KraussMaffei is closing this gap with easyTrace.

In the application at the trade fair - fabricating connectors with metal inserts that are overmolded on a CX 80 - KraussMaffei creates custom reports for the respective article using data from easyTrace.
