SACMI Group held its centenary celebration at a company event in Shanghai, China on December 2, 2019. The event was attended by more than 140 senior management and customer representatives of the Italian-based Group to recognize the 100-year anniversary.

From a small workshop to a multinational group

On December 2, 1919, nine unemployed mechanics and blacksmiths from Imola established the Società Anonima Cooperativa Meccanici Imola (SACMI).

100 years later, the SACMI Group is now an international provider of machines and complete plants for the ceramics, packaging, beverage-closures, metals and advanced materials industries.

Today, the Group has over 80 manufacturing and service companies in 30 countries worldwide and employs around 4,500 people. In 2018, the revenues of the Group reached 1.4 billion.

“The SACMI story is an extraordinary tale. It mirrors the industrial growth of both Italy and the town of Imola, home to cooperative movement that has given substance to a dream, that of creating shared well-being through work,” pointed out Paolo Mongardi, President of SACMI Imola.

It's extraordinary because the company has always faced the future with vision, combining innovation and a strong focus on customer care with a set of core values - cooperation, solidarity, community - that still shape our decisions today.

Great confidence in the Chinese market

Paolo Mongardi commented that the Belt and Road Initiative opens up exciting prospects for the global society and the manufacturing industry, and more specifically, it means a new development opportunity.

“SACMI’s decision to enter the Chinese market dated back to 1995. Today, China has become a driver of global innovation and major economic growth, and the country is determined to develop through industrialization. We have great confidence in this market,” he added.

Focusing on circular economy and digitalization

Paolo Mongardi said, following further growth, SACMI has set its goals for 2030: strengthening its leadership in its core sectors and addressing the challenges of the circular economy and the Industry 4.0 revolution.

In an exclusive interview with during the event, Vezio Bernardi, General Manager Closures, Containers and PET, SACMI, said SACMI is now working with raw material suppliers to accelerate the development of bottle compression molding and preform injection molding solutions which made of biomaterials and recycled materials.

“The circular economy has brought major changes to the packaging industry, but it has also created new opportunities. The key is that we can seize these opportunities,” Bernardi said.

According to him, the outlook of the Chinese market is still relatively optimistic despite market slowdown. “60% of the caps currently produced in China are manufactured with SACMI’s machines,” he said.

Important milestones

December 2, 1919: Foundation of the company

Out of the rubble of the Great War, nine unemployed mechanics and blacksmiths from Imola established the Società Anonima Cooperativa Meccanici Imola (SACMI).

Mid to late 1930s: Leap forward in ceramics and packaging fields

By the mid-1930s it had already developed its first own-brand machines.

After the Second World War came the leap forward into ceramics and packaging with the development of the first tile press and the first complete crown cap manufacturing solution.

1960s: Becoming truly international

In the 1960s the Group - which had already been exporting more than 80% of its output on a stable basis for some years - became truly international while maintaining its strategic and productive core in Italy.

Steadily, the Group made the leap from machine maker to plant engineering provider, covering every stage of the process from raw material preparation to finished product logistics.
The SACMI Group now operates globally in 30 countries.

2000s: Focusing progressive digitization of factory processes

In the 2000s, SACMI was quick to seize the opportunities offered by progressive digitization of factory processes. It launched comprehensive new solutions - such as the SACMI Continua+ line for large slabs - and channeled more and more resources into customer services.

In the recent years, SACMI focuses on research and development into new materials, products and processes with reduced environmental impact.

2014-2019: Achieving best results in its history

The year 2018 generated revenues of over 1.4 billion and saw the number of employees worldwide pass the 4,500 mark.

Over that same period, investment in research - over 220 million - and the protection of intellectual property remained strong and steady. Since its founding SACMI and other Group companies have filed 4,500 patents.
