Eastman expanding copolyester production in Kuantan, Malaysia by 20%

Eastman Chemical Company plans to expand capacity of its copolyester site in Kuantan, Malaysia by 20%, which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2018.

This expansion positions Eastman to meet the increasing global demand we’re seeing for our copolyester materials,” said Burt Capel, Vice President and General Manager of Eastman's Specialty Plastics business.

Specialty Plastics is a part of Eastman’s Advanced Materials business segment. Eastman’s Kuantan site produces several polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified (PETG), including Eastman Spectar and Eastman Eastar copolyesters.

Husky says sales of company a “rumor” only

Responding to media reports on the company’s possible sale, Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd. said the news was merely a rumor.

[As] a matter of policy we don’t comment on changes in our ownership. We have two private equity owners, Berkshire Partners and OMERS, and they have different investment horizons and criteria. Our business is performing well and our presence in our end markets is getting stronger with the new products that we are bringing to market. So we are not surprised by rumors like this because we are very familiar with this ownership dynamic. From our experience with private equity we have learned that maintaining our focus squarely on our customers and strategic priorities is the best response to rumors such as these,” the company said in a statement.

Sadara commissions last plant, the first TDI facility in the Gulf region

On August 14, Sadara Chemical Company (Sadara), a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and the Dow Chemical Company, celebrated the commissioning of the last of its 26 plants – an isocyanates section currently producing crude quantities of toluene di isocyanate (TDI) and other specialty chemicals.

A first for the Gulf region, the TDI section is mainly used in the production of flexible polyurethane foam for furniture, mattresses, cushioning and car seats. TDI also has a variety of industrial uses, such as coatings, adhesives, sealants, specialty foams and other products.

The TDI section consists of three integrated units producing di nitro toluene (DNT), toluene di amine (TDA), and toluene di isocyanate (TDI).

The isocyanates envelope also includes an unprecedented integrated facility producing PMDI or polymeric methylene di phenyl di isocyanate. The PMDI Plant began producing commercial quantities in early June.

Additionally, Sadara is producing another important polyurethane precursor – polyether polyols. The company’s Polyols Plant came on-stream in late July.
