Focusing on “Smart Manufacturing, Innovative Materials and Green Solutions”, CHINAPLAS 2018 addresses the latest needs of many application industries, including automotive, medical, packaging, E&E, building and construction, presenting leading and latest high-tech solutions from around the globe.


The world is shifting into high gear on sustainability. As one of the major manufacturing countries of vehicles, China has also put emphasis on the development of lightweight, energy-saving and new energy vehicles in its “Made in China 2025” strategy.

CHINAPLAS 2018 will be replete with high-tech and sustainable solutions for automotive industry by more than 1,500 exhibitors.

Polymer-based composites, thanks to their lightness, strength, moldability, elasticity, corrosion resistance and weatherability, play an important role in producing lightweight vehicles with weight reduction by about 30%.

Beijing Tiangang Auxiliary Co., Ltd. will introduce new applications of the “Targeted Nano Enhancement Technology” at the show for the automotive industry to achieve thin-wall and lightweight goals. The technology makes use of the special targeted release and enhancement of high performance nano particles and facilitates the nano dispersion of functional additives in polymer composites.

DSM’s Stanyl HGR2 PA46 resin will be displayed at the company’s booth this year. It is powered by a 5.0L V8 engine as a drop-in replacement for PA66, providing enhanced wear and friction performance as well as reducing emissions. The resin has already been used in chain tensioner arms in the Ford F-150 and Mustang, and will be utilized on more vehicles afterwards.

One of the presentation highlights of BASF will be a range of new material solutions for lightweighting in the automotive industry. The chemical giant will launch a stylish new solution for door handles, made with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), which offers excellent adhesion to thermoplastics, softness and high temperature resistance.

Cabot China Investment Co., Ltd. will debut a near-odorless, bluish black masterbatch for auto application. The bluish undertone provides excellent aesthetic elegance.

In the meantime, advanced equipment and new processing technology do also accelerate the development of a green automotive industry.

At the expanded company booth, Arburg will be presenting the ProFoam physical foaming technology in China for the first time. A hybrid Allrounder 570 H with a size 800 injection unit will produce an interesting component for passenger car engine compartments.
Highly robust ready-to-install tablet housings with a wall thickness of 0.6 mm are produced on an ENGEL machine.
A fully automatable method of processing continuous fibre-reinforced semi-finished thermoplastic composites or organic sheets, which is named as organomelt, will be on the threshold of automotive series production at the show. ENGEL will use tablet housings to show how very high stability can be achieved, even with extreme thin-wall technology.

The manufacturing cell comprises an ENGEL insert injection moulding machine in a vertical design with a roll-to-roll IMD unit, an ENGEL easix articulated robot and an infrared oven also developed and produced by ENGEL.


New materials have been finding wider applications in the medical sector. Functional medical grade materials like polymers with good biocompatibility, new materials for implants, sterilization/gamma ray resistant materials and electro-conductive materials are only a few examples.

At this year’s CHINAPLAS, leading material supplier Covestro will be showcasing its new Makrolon Rx3440 polycarbonate (PC). It is an innovative medical material used in luer connectors and other IV components. It has high cracking resistance to solvents found in oncology drugs and helps prevent damage to connector components.

Meanwhile, Chi Mei Corp. will display its new generation PC for medical devices at CHINAPLAS 2018. The WONDERLITE PC-115P is chlorine-free, high flowability PC which is suitable for medical applications such as dialyzers, infusion parts, etc. The production process of this material is non-phosgene, which is both cleaner and more environmentally-friendly.

In addition, LCY Chemical Corp. will be presenting its medical grade polypropylene (PP) which features high transparency, low migration and low ash content. It can be used for production of IV bottles and transparent bottles by blow molding, and non-prefilled syringes and centrifuge tubes by injection molding.

In order to support medical and pharmaceutical applications, the medical grade PP is certified according to most stringent regulatory standards such as the US Pharmacopeia (USP), Drug Master File (DMF) listing of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and requirements of China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA).


Promotion of lightweighting continues to be the major driver for the packaging industry also, as not only can it reduce the use of materials, but also effectively reduce the gross weight, facilitating transportation.

Besides, biodegradable materials as well as centralized collection and recycling of packaging materials are gaining popularity among many companies.

The Dow Chemical Company’s enhanced expanded polyethylene (EPE) foam solution delivers high level of cushion performance and abuse resistance, achieving new levels of down gauging. As said, there is 10 - 15% savings on raw material cost in unit packaging.

Henan Yinjinda New Materials Co., Ltd. will launch the laser low temperature shrink film for glass bottles at the show. The launch will be the first in Asia. As introduced, the product is laser anti-counterfeiting and can cover containers. It is also half the price of dry washable label.

At the show, renowned machine manufacturer Starlinger will highlight the company’s AD*STAR technology for block bottom valve sacks made from polypropylene woven fabric. The fabric for AD*STAR sacks is woven on high-speed circular looms, and the model RX 6.0 will be on display at the show.

Starlinger also recognized the immense potential of PET and built machinery for the production of tape fabric that can be fed with virgin PET, recycled pellets, and even PET bottle flakes. The technology is used in the packaging of food and consumer goods.

For caps production, a full range of Sacmi products will be displayed with the successful compression press range as the highlight. The range is now enhanced with new cap-preform integrated design services.

Through the range of CCM (Continuous Compression Moulding) compression presses, Sacmi offers the lowest cycle times in the industry, achieving productivity as high as 2,000 caps per minute with just 48 moulds. It is said that this technology has the capacity to manufacture lighter, better-performing caps when compared to alternative solutions such as injection.

E&E, IT & telecom

Through the abundance of solutions introduced to mobile phone manufacturers, the realization of automation and Industry 4.0 is now more apparent than ever in the E&E sector. Smart manufacturing solutions are also in high demand among home appliance manufacturers.

Chen Hsong SPEED series of small-to-medium-tonnage hydraulic injection molding machine features 1.5 seconds dry cycle time and 300mm/s injection speed. The machine is an excellent option for injection molding of mobile phone accessories and precision electronics. It ensures high repetition accuracy and stable dimensions. It can sustain long-term large-scale automated production.

Arburg will demonstrate its competence in the E&E application with a machine designed for LSR (liquid silicone rubber) processing from the Golden Edition entry-level series. An Allrounder 420 C Golden Edition will produce flexible LSR cases for the iPhone 8 at the show.
The GX series of KraussMaffei.
Besides, a GX 600-3000 from KraussMaffei creates exciting surface effects for a 13-inch laptop housing using inductive mold heat-balancing in partnership with Roctool (HP plastics). At the show, an LRX 350, the new linear robot generation from KraussMaffei, will ensure secure and precise component demolding. The optimized kinematic unit and the new air pressure saving function support this energy efficient manufacturing.

For new materials, masterbatch company Colloids Limited has developed the E-Tec engineering product range. It is a range of black permanently conductive compounds specially formulated for electrical protection.

By incorporating properties such as low friction and thermal loading control, this range of polymer compounds maintain dimensional stability, weather resistance, impact resistance and anti- electrostatic, whilst adhering to aesthetic criteria, without making concessions to processability.

Building and construction

At CHINAPLAS 2018, high-performance PVC formwork, large diameter polyolefin drainage, water-based polyurethane, solvent-free eco-synthetic leather, lead-free PVC profiles, as well as the recovery of recycled raw materials, etc., will be the highlights for visitors coming from building and construction industry.

The XPS Board Production Line from Jiangsu Cenmen Equipment Corp., Ltd. is a perfect replacement of CO2 composite foaming agent for CFC foaming agent. And the compressive strength of fine products can be improved by more than 15%.

KraussMaffei Berstorff will be presenting premium quality solutions in PVC and PO pipe extrusion at the fairgrounds. The company will introduce the biaxially oriented PVC pipe technology together with Baosu Pipe Industry (Hebei province, China).

Baosu is a specialist in PVC pipe extrusion that has focused on the development of special stretching technology. Meanwhile, KraussMaffei Berstorff has maintained a strong, long-term customer relationship with Baosu since the eighties.

Among other developments, KraussMaffei Berstorff will contribute its twin-screw extruder for U-PVC production based on the latest technology to this cooperation as a core component.

In order to respond more quickly and with more precision to customer demands regarding process engineering and material composition, Baosu Pipe Industry is planning to install a system, which will equip twin-screw extruder from KraussMaffei Berstorff, that will be used for demonstration purposes.

Compared to non-oriented PVC pipes, biaxially oriented pipes achieve nearly twice the impact resistance, higher internal pressure resistance and a weight reduction of up to 40%. They will predominantly be used for wastewater and drinking water supply.

Here in particular, they exhibit an excellent combination of sustainability and outstanding technical properties. Transporting and laying these pipes is also easier. Baosu Pipe Industry will market the finished product under the brand name Taiji Blue pipe.

QuickSwitch technology for automatic in-line dimension changes, already successful for many years, is taking over the Chinese and Asian market, according to KraussMaffei Berstorff. Using QuickSwitch, the producer gets small order batches with short set-up times and minimal material waste.

KraussMaffei Berstorff will demonstrate to CHINAPLAS visitors the advantages of this technology using a tapered piece, which illustrates the transition from the manufactured diameter into the new dimension (160 -250 mm). This is the company’s answer to the trend in mass-produced products towards individualized, high-quality single-unit production.
