The number of pharmaceutical and healthcare products in the market continues to grow, and packaging plays a significant role in enhancing safety and the ease of use. As the workhorse at the heart of packaging, plastics are more recognized in the development of innovative medical packaging solutions.

Inert and stable plastic packages extend eye drop shelf-life

The lack of information about the exact expiry date of eye drops in conditions of inertia and stability led hospital pharmacies to tell patients to have an appointment within seven days to get a new formulated drug. A new research project has been recently developed to allow the validation of two packages for eye drops and reduction of patient visits.

AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Centre, in conjunction with ISS La Fe, MicroBios and PFP Termopolímeros, has successfully completed the PHARMAPACKSAFE project.

Thanks to this project, developed within the framework of the R&D national call Retos Colaboración and funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, it has been able to validate the inertia and stability of two plastic packages for eye drops that were discarded.

The research conducted in the project has verified that the packaging of three different eye drops (based on tacrolimus, chlorhexidine and voriconazole) in these packages is safe for four and six months stored at fridge, respectively.

This will allow reducing the number of tailored medications to be used as eye drops in hospital pharmacies with the subsequent cost saving as well as fewer appointments of patients to the hospital pharmacy.

Bottles made from recyclable PET offer operational efficiencies

Packaging for Target Simply Balanced Vitamins, developed by TricorBraun, is a premium packaging for a new line of upscale nutraceuticals, offering operational efficiencies, child-resistance and senior-friendliness.

Target tapped TricorBraun for assistance in achieving its preferred design specifications. To help Target narrow down packaging options, TricorBraun’s engineers deployed a 3D printer to produce a bottle and cap prototype with which to test injection-molded, spring closure options.

Through 3D molding, engineers determined that a three-piece solution would improve functional performance and attract consumers with different shapes, colors and color combinations.
The bottle features a differentiating oblong shape and wider mouth for easier dispensing.
TricorBraun’s design team settled on a single bottle and closure design, which reduces the number of overall SKUs and streamlines warehousing, shipping and other supply chain processes.

Standardized sizes also meant that the package manufacturer needed only a minimum number of tools to create all three pieces. Sizing and design of the package overall work with existing machinery and processing systems to run smoothly and efficiently without requiring costly changeovers to other tooling or machinery.

When selecting materials, packaging engineers ensured that the package would be fully recyclable. Target’s sustainability consultants analyzed packaging options and provided recommendations that were incorporated into the final design. Both the cap and the body are constructed of PET, which is widely accepted in municipalities’ recycling programs.

The final packaging met Target’s design criteria, and some design features provided multiple economic and operational advantages. The bottle has an oblong shape, which differentiates the package from standard, round bottles and is physically easier for the elderly to open.

The bottles are designed with a wider-than-usual mouth, which enables faster filling and easy, hygienic dispensing. The transparent bottles give consumers a view of the product at retail and let them monitor how much is left in the package over time.

Transparent, certified and child-resistant package

Consumer products marketers have used clear plastic cartons for decades to offer customers a glimpse of what’s inside, to provide exceptional shelf impact, to support product positioning, and to enhance brand performance.

HLP Klearfold offers these same performances attribute to medical and recreational cannabis products marketers, while exceeding child-resistance and senior-friendly criteria of the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC).

HLP Klearfold, a provider of printed plastic packaging, has developed a versatile, protective, creative branding package to meet the fast-evolving needs of the cannabis market. The patent-pending Klearfold Keeper CR is the first of its kind, transparent, fully customizable, child-resistant (CR) package.

As introduced, it is a tray-and-sleeve style CR package. The clear plastic substrate delivers product visibility and far greater tear resistance than the paperboard used in other tray-and-sleeve style CR cannabis packages.

Also, the resiliency of the Klearfold Keeper CR substrate allows its simple but very effective locking mechanism to re-lock many times for multiple use products. Adding a wafer or security seal to the open end of the package provides tamper evidence.

Following the instructions printed on the package, an adult can easily unlock it with a thumb press on a release tab that extends from the face of the outer carton.

To ensure that the tray remains connected to the outer carton at all times, its locking tab snaps into a second slot toward the open end of the carton, preventing its complete removal.

The cartons are fully customizable, are available in a variety of sizes, and can be made from box-grade PET or RPET, which contains 30% postconsumer recycled content. They are delivered pre-assembled, are easy to fill, and require no machinery to set-up or fill.
