Chemical-pharmaceutical industry in Germany had a drop in the industry’s sales and producer prices with slightly increased production in the first half of 2024, reported VCI, the German Chemicals Industry Association.

Overall production increased

The overall production for the industry has increased by 3% in the past year. However, it is still about 11% lower than figure in 2021, implying that many plants were still not operating to capacity and remained below the rentability threshold.

Data on the production.

The production of inorganic basic chemicals was 12% higher, compared to the same period in 2023. Production of organic basic chemicals also rose 8.5%.

Production growth in other sectors of chemistry was significantly lower. The output of consumer-related chemicals and polymer production increased slightly while production of specialty chemicals slightly dropped.

For pharmaceutical sector, production improved by 1.5% and sales grew 6% in the first half of 2024.

Slightly drop in total sales

The total sales from chemical-pharmaceutical industry were around EUR 112 billion in the first half of 2024, which is a 1% drop than last year. Sales in domestic sector declined by 5% while there was a 1.5% increase in the foreign sales business.

Forecast on the second half of 2024

VCI provided a forecast on the second half of 2024. In the chemical-pharmaceutical industry, it is predicted that in production increase by 3.5% and sales increase by 1.5%, with foreign business as the essential driver.

Measures to attract businesses

Companies are deciding against Germany as a business location, due to the country’s lack of orders, high energy prices and growing bureaucracy.

VCI pointed out that Germany has sufficient potential to increase its competitiveness, including:

  1. Reduce charges: Competitive energy prices by easing burdens from electricity tax and grid fees. Cuts in company and corporate taxation and an end to solidarity surcharge are important.

  2. Improve basic conditions: Investments in education, security and infrastructure, including the expansion of electricity grids, as public services.

  3. Refresh competition rules: Less bureaucracy for more investment incentives at both national and EU levels.

“We do not just need reforms where the very facts are concerned – we also need a mental change. The nation must become more proactive and dynamic,” added Markus Steilemann, President of VCI.
