2019 International Technology and Application Conference on Bio-based Materials to be held in Ningbo, China

Ⅰ. Background

According to a report released by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the global production of plastic waste has continued to increase since 2015, with over 300 million tons of inflows per year. By 2050 the number is expected to reach 12 billion tons. In regions like Europe and Asia, an increasingly strict ban on plastics is being implemented to curb plastic waste. Bio-based materials known as “green, environmentally friendly, renewable and easily degradable” are particularly important and usher in the golden period of its development. 

According to the statistics of European Bioplastics Association and nova-Institute, the global bioplastics capacity will increase from about 2.11 million tons in 2018 to about 2.62 million tons by 2023, of which PLA, PHAs, PBAT, etc are the main contributors. Statistics show that more than 60% of the bioplastics are used in packaging-related industries, of which food and beverage industry is the largest consumer with a total market value of over US$4 billion in 2018. It is estimated that by 2027, the relevant market value will exceed US$12.7 billion and will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 15.2%. As an important component of Chinese new materials industry, China's bio-based materials industry enters its booming period, with an annual growth rate of around 20% and a total annual output of over 6 million tons. 

Following the previous three sessions, the 2019 International Technology and Application Conference on Bio-based Materials continues to focus on "Green Matters" and the entire industry chain. We sincerely invite internationally renowned experts to exchange new technologies, new processes, new applications and new trends of bio-based products such as chemicals, plastics, fibers, etc to promote the rapid and healthy development of the industry.

V. Previous Review

The 2017 International Technology and Application Conference on Bio-based Materials was successfully held on April 20-21 at the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, CAS. It was the summit forum on bio-materials in China. The forum focused on the innovation of bio-based materials with the theme “Green Matters”. In addition to bio-based materials, it also extended to the development and commercialization of key platform chemicals for upstream industries such as bio-based chemicals, biomass conversion, involving related fields such as green chemicals, green packaging, green applications, etc. The event brought together more than 300 guests from over 50 scientific research institutions, nearly 100 companies and 20 more media coming from China, the United States, Canada, France, Australia, etc. It was grand in scene and rich in content. The forum had 25 special reports, including 5 reports from enterprises and 6 international reports from renowned experts. During the reports, we also arranged round-table discussion, academic paper & poster selection, matchmaking meeting on technology-capital project, which all achieved great results.
