Earlier this year, Google announced its climate action plan for the next decade, and committed that all of its products would include recycled materials by 2022.
Google has recently shared about the progress and additional sustainability goals that its consumer hardware team is committed to. This year, all of the new Pixel and Nest products are designed with recycled material.
The lately launched Pixel 5.
The back housing (or the back cover) of the lately launched Pixel 5 is made with 100% recycled aluminum. This is Google's first phone to incorporate recycled aluminum, which not only eliminates the use of mined aluminum in the enclosure and reduces waste, it also lowers the carbon footprint of manufacturing the enclosure by 35% compared to using virgin aluminum.
The new Nest Audio.
The new Nest Audio contains 70% recycled plastic across its enclosure parts including the acoustic fabric, and is covered in the same sustainable fabric that Google first introduced with Nest Mini last year.
Google's latest Nest Thermostat.
And for the latest Nest Thermostat, Google has made the trim plate from 75% post-consumer recycled plastic.
Google is updating its original goal and committing to using recycled or renewable material in at least 50% of all plastic used across all its hardware products by 2025, prioritizing recycled plastic everywhere as it can.
In addition, waste is generated at all layers of a supply chain and while Google is working toward understanding each layer of the process and how to combat waste. According to the company, it is committing to achieving UL 2799 Zero Waste to Landfill certification at all final assembly manufacturing sites by 2022. This certification means that the vast majority of waste from those operations will be recycled.
Google further stated that, it will continue to keep all shipping of Made by Google hardware to and from its direct customers 100% carbon neutral as well as it is committing to making its product packaging 100% plastic free and 100% recyclable.
