Three megatrends discussed at CPRJ Plastics in Automotive Conference

With the theme “Reduce cost and increase efficiency, move towards the new four modernizations”, more than 400 experts and professionals from OEMs and institutions attended the 10th Edition CPRJ Plastics in Automotive Conference and Showcase, which was grandly held today at SORL Hotel Shanghai, China.

The 1.5-day conference (Nov 5-6) is hosted by Adsale Publishing Ltd. (Adsale Group), organized by China Plastic & Rubber Journal (CPRJ) & CPRJ International, co-organized by OE qiche and supported by Shanghai Society of Automotive Engineers, CHINAPLAS and Shanghai Dual-use Science and Technology Promotion Association.

Due to the restriction under COVID-19 pandemic, Janet Tong, General Manager of Adsale Publishing Ltd. (Adsale Group) was not able to participate in the conference in person. In the online welcome remarks, she said, “Decarbonization, informatization and digitalization are the development directions of global automotive industry. Plastics, as one of the crucial materials of automotive, will make more important contributions to several technical fields, including lightweighting.”

Liang Yuancong, Secretary General of Shanghai Society of Automotive Engineers, analyzed the market situation of automotive industry during the post-pandemic period, “The impact of the pandemic on China's automotive industry is mainly short-term, which will not lead to serious and negative influence on the fundamental demand.”

 

He explained, “It means the demand for car purchases that was suppressed during the pandemic will gradually recover, and it may have a retaliatory rebound. The automotive market in China is estimated to be prosperous again in 2024.”


Trend 1: New energy vehicles

 

The new energy vehicle sector has been evolving from the “chain ecology” between parts, R&D, production and marketing service companies, to a “net-like ecology” involving multiple areas such as automotive, energy, transportation, and information communications. As the sector enters a new development phase focusing on integration, materials and molding technologies are under the spotlight.

These trends require the enhancement of foundation technologies for car manufacturing, including the industrial application of lightweight materials such as fiber-reinforced composite materials.”

Co., Ltd., talked about latest material requirements for new energy vehicles and 3C applications, “The battery cooling system for new energy engine makes a revolutionary change on the requirement for the work condition, so as for the materials. For example, it requires the material working temperature to be 80-110℃, the system pressure is about 3 bar and fit for the change of coolant medium and water vapor barrier.”

A “High-Level Dialogue” focusing on the topic of “Reformation and adjustment - how can new energy vehicles increase market share with the help of smart technology?” was concurrently held.

In his presentation. Peter Peng, Two-Platen Injection Molding Machine Market & Automotive Industry Director at Guangdong Yizumi Precision Machinery Co., Ltd, explained how combinations of innovative molding processes can help automotive manufacturing reduce costs and increase efficiency, “For instance, the automation integrated solution of bumpers production is equipped with a UN3200DP two-platen injection molding machine, integrated automatic die changing panel, magnetic template, robot automation system and MES networking system to realize automatic, unmanned and smart manufacturing. In particular, the automatic die changing can be completed within 3 minutes.”

 

“Another example is the micro-foaming process manages to lower the weight of the finished product by 10-25%, so as to ease the buckling deformation problem. These reduce the occurring of repeated modification of mold size, thereby lowering the mold design and manufacturing costs,” added Peng.


Trend 3: Innovative interior and exterior decoration

 

China's scale of automotive interior and exterior decoration industry exceeds RMB 235 billion, accounting for more than 35% of the global automotive market. There are tons of development space and possibility.

Zhu Yi, Senior Director of China FAW R&D Institute, Materials Institute, presented the novel interiors design and material application for Hongqi, a subsidiary car brand of FAW. “The control panel of Hongqi E-HS9 adopts a large full LCD screen and is connected with 18-way electric adjustable seats providing functions like warming, ventilation, massage (rear row) and wireless charging,” she noted. “The car is also equipped with an advanced display system (AR-HUD) with a full-color viewing distance of 30m and a projection screen of 44 inches, integrating navigation and intelligent driving information.”

It is estimated that the antibacterial market in China's automotive industry in 2021 will be US$27.9 million. Antibacterial technology can make it easier for us to keep car interiors clean, reduce odors and stains and extend product life.”
