Because of the restriction under COVID-19 pandemic, Janet Tong, General Manager of Adsale Publishing Ltd. (Adsale Group) was not able to attend the conference in person. She made her online welcome remarks and expressed the gratitude to the co-organizers and supporting units.

Janet Tong mentioned that China's medical device market has become the world's second largest. “In recent years, the CAGR of China's medical device industry has been maintained at around 15%, and this rapid growth is supported by advanced materials and technology. The conference will focus on the macro trends of the industry, which are innovative applications of high-performance materials, precision manufacturing, advanced technologies, automation and medical sterilization packaging,” she said.

“With the advantageous factors of marketing, technologies and government policies, the medical devices made in China are developing towards high-quality,” she added.

Trend 1: Complying with policies to seize opportunities

China has successively launched several medical device-related policies, such as centralized procurement and registrant system. What impact will these policies bring to both upstream and downstream enterprises?

Jiang Feng, Executive Vice President / Director-General of China Association for Medical Devices Industry / China Service Alliance of Medical Device Technology Innovation.

In his speech, Dr. Jiang Feng, Executive Vice President / Director-General of China Association for Medical Devices Industry / China Service Alliance of Medical Device Technology Innovation, pointed out that there are still new opportunities for medical materials to be explored, especially polymers.

“Many of the medical device innovations, such as dialysis filters, start with material innovations. I hope the companies will work hard in material innovations and continue to serve the industry,” he stated.

Xu Shan_web.jpg

Xu Shan, Secretary-General of China Association for Medical Devices Industry.

Xu Shan, Secretary-General of China Association for Medical Devices Industry, analyzed the developments and trends of the medical device industry. “The global medical device industry is moving towards a capital-driven collaborative innovation structure. It means that small and medium-sized enterprises are mainly working for innovations while large-sized enterprises are mostly responsible for industrial collaborations and capital-driven,” she noted.

“Under the implementation of the 12th Five-Year Plan and the 13th Five-Year Plan, the Chinese medical device industry has narrowed the gap in international advanced level of high-end digital diagnosis equipment, high-value materials, in-vitro diagnostic equipment and reagents,” added Xu Shan. “Moreover, under the 14th Five-Year Plan, the continuous technological innovation capability of the Chinese medical device industry will be accelerated.”

Meanwhile, the representative of Suzhou Inspection Bureau of Jiangsu Provincial Drug Administration emphasized that the society has been paying more attention to the medical industry under the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Huawei, Tencent and Meituan have begun to enter medical devices market. For example, Huawei Device Co., Ltd. has obtained the registration certificate of wrist single-lead ECG collector. Relying on the 5G technology, the company will develop in remote monitoring of wearable medical care, remote surgery, remote imaging consultation and remote medical care,” he remarked. “Besides, medical polymer products belong to a niche market which is relatively difficult to achieve centralized procurement, so the future market prospects are promising.”

In his sharing, Tony Pei, Deputy General Manager at Suzhou Yuyue Medical Technology Co.,Ltd., said more medical device companies will be encouraged to adopt the CDMO model - the contract-customized R&D and production.

“CDMO is a crucial part of the entire medical device innovation system, and the ecosystem itself is the foundation for the CDMO development. CDMO helps reduce the risk before product forensics, realize faster application process, make the product model easier to replicate, achieve multi-point entrustment and expand production right after certificated,” he explained.

Selena Qin_web.jpg

Selena Qin, Secretary-General of Medical Devices Packaging Committee of China Association for Medical Devices Industry.

Regarding the latest regulations and standards on medical device packaging, Selena Qin, Secretary-General of Medical Devices Packaging Committee of China Association for Medical Devices Industry, cited, “The new EU medical device regulation MDR (EU) 2017/745 applies to all accessories, such as packaging, of medical devices and helps enhance quality, safety and reliability of medical devices. To strengthen the transparency of information, increase customer vigilance and enhance market supervision are also the purposes of new regulation.”

“The latest modification of this regulation is the transition from CE certification to full life cycle management, and the notifying agency must meet strict qualification and audit requirements,” she added.

Trend 2: Plastic as alternative of metal driving the demand

With more use of disposable materials in the medical industry, the replacement of metal with plastic is growing rapidly and the demand for polymer materials is increasing.

When it comes to the characteristics of the demand for polymer materials in the surgical medical market, Wu Weimin, Vice General Manager of R&D at Golden Stapler Surgical Co. Ltd., commented, “Small quantities, high requirements and large varieties will be the norm.”

“The problem of polymer materials in the stapler industry is gaining attention by many companies and the use of suitable materials is getting more common. Furthermore, special materials will gradually be widely used,” he said.

Wang Gang, R&D Director at Lifetech Scientific (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd., discussed the applications and technical requirements of medical implant polymer materials (ePTFE, polylactic acid), medical interventional catheter materials (PA, PEBAX, TPU) and medical engineering plastics (ABS, PC, POM).

“Medical ePTFE membrane materials can be improved and developed in the direction of membrane material enhancement, creep resistance and biocompatibility. Polylactic acid can be made as bioactive materials that mimic the cell microbial environment or with specific biological functions,” he named a few examples.
