The newly released smartphone, Carbon 1 MK II, that features extreme lightweight, ultra-thinness, slim design and sustainability will be showcased by LANXESS.
Designed and engineered in Germany from Carbon Mobile, it is claimed as the world’s first smartphone produced with advanced carbon fiber technology, thanks to Tepex composite from LANXESS, a leading supplier of high-performance engineering plastics for the automotive and electronics industries.
Specifically, the base material for the production of the housing is a thermoplastic composite from the LANXESS Tepex dynalite product range. It is reinforced with fabrics of fine 1K continuous carbon fiber filaments.
This composite material, developed for extremely lightweight components subjected to considerable mechanical stress, does more than just allow exceptionally thin wall thicknesses.
In fact, with its high degree of strength and rigidity, it also helps to make the housing very robust for day-to-day use. In addition, the matte-black carbon fibers give the smartphone a truly high-tech look.
This innovative mobile phone follows the same construction principle as the load-bearing chassis of a Formula 1 car, with the housing designed as a monocoque, or “single shell”, allowing it to weigh only 125 grams, a third lighter than conventional smartphones. It is made of sustainable and recyclable materials and is designed to be repair-friendly for long service life.

Sustainable and safe flame retardant
Another highlight of LANXESS will be Emerald Innovation 3000 (EI3000), a replacement solution to hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), a brominated flame retardant that has been defined as a persistent organic pollutant which is restricted by the Stockholm Convention and will be phased out in China by the end of this year.
EI3000 is inherently of low toxicity and low bioavailability due to its large-sized molecules. It addresses the concerns about human health and the environmental impact in comparison to those HBCD replacements with small-sized molecules.
These traits allow EI3000 to provide sustainable fire safety solution to the expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation. As the main materials for the building insulation industry, EPS and XPS insulation need flame retardants to meet the requirement for fire safety. For this reason, the industry of building energy efficiency will benefit from EI 3000.
