CHINAPLAS 2022, together with Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association, successfully held the "Experience Sharing Forum of Carbon Neutrality in Electronic Industry" webinar on 25 May, 2022.

In the context of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality, three speakers were invited to share their experience in implementing technologies in the electronic industry to facilitate carbon neutrality.

Three speakers delivered presentation at the "Experience Sharing Forum of Carbon Neutrality in Electronic Industry" webinar.

Digitalized solutions make site management easier

DU Lixing, Senior Manager of Shanghai Delta Electronics Co., Ltd. / SGS Energy Manager / Yangtze River Delta Energy Manager, shared on the topic of "Factory-based Carbon Neutrality Solutions for Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction".

Delta, a global provider of power and thermal management solutions, has set up long term energy saving goals and solutions to reduce electricity intensity of its own plants, offices and data centers by 30% in average, he introduced.

The company recommends and offers green, smart manufacturing solutions and platforms based on FMCS, EMS and AI, in order to help address tasks like data processing, site management, safety issue and energy efficiency optimization.

Delta offers green, smart manufacturing solutions and platforms based on FMCS, EMS and AI.

In terms of data processing and site management, Delta’s solutions perform control and monitoring of operation, remote operation, temperature & humidity, equipment maintenance, water resource & quality, alarm, abnormal situation and data backup.

For safety issue, video monitoring, automatic water and electricity meter reading, alarm management and voice notification can be done.

Moreover, for energy efficiency optimization, Delta’s energy management system allows visualization of energy consumption, energy saving performance analysis, statistical analysis of energy consumption and abnormal energy consumption notification. These energy consumption evaluations cover compressed gas, electricity, natural gas and water.

One of the application examples that DU Lixing shared was an energy saving solution, which was developed combining Delta’s advantage of operation technology and Microsoft’s expertise in information technology for a medical plant.

The solution integrates software and functions of Cloud Server, Power BI, Azure, DIAEnergie, Control System, Inverter and Power Meter. It enables some 30% energy saving for the plant and increases the plant’s automation level.

Smart tools tackle energy saving challenges

Meanwhle, the other two speakers presented their experience regarding "Lighthouse Factory Empowers Carbon Neutralization”.

YI Zhi, Associate Director of Wistron InfoComm Technology Service (KunShan) Co., Ltd. / Dean of Digital Empowerment Center Academy, believes that management of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission is one of the corporate responsibilities. He stated that the company is committed to realizing carbon neutrality in 2030.

Wistron carries out Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

Specifically, Wistron has carried out Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) based on ISO14064-1 to examine carbon emission of its products and manufacturing process. It has applied for carbon emission statement, arranged special teams for reviewing energy consumption, invested in the use of renewable energy and set up all-round carbon reduction projects as well.

More importantly, Wistron is convinced that digitalized tools boost energy saving to a great extent. YI Zhi said that the company is therefore adopting different smart platforms and panels to monitor the plant operation, energy efficiency, electricity, exhaust system and air conditioning systems.

ZHU Junfeng, Associate Director / Senior Engineer of Energy Management / Carbon Emission Manager of Wistron, thinks that the challenges of energy consumption management come from, for example, disorganized energy consumption records, failure of quantifying efficacy, insufficient data, no data sharing and lack of analysis.

He suggested that effective execution of carbon reduction and energy saving can be done with the support of IIOT, 5G, AI and Big Data.

Smart management tools help manufacturers reduce energy consumption.

For instance, Wistron uses the smart control system with AI-based setting function for air conditioning to save 25% - 35% of energy consumption and smart operation panel for exhaust system to save 15% - 25% of energy consumption.

During the Q&A section, audience would like to know the current main difficulties in the electronics industry. YI Zhi mentioned that as different countries have been launching rules and initiatives related to carbon neutrality and emission peak, the market is expecting and requiring more sustainable products and manufacturing process.

He emphasized that transformation to digitalization is an important step to realize energy saving, however, it can be challenging to some companies in terms of investment in hardware, technology and equipment.
