China to increase investment on medical equipment

China will increase investments on medical and pharmaceutical equipment during its 12th Five-year Plan, according to a news report on Chinese health newspaper Jian Kang Bao quoting the speech of a representative of the country's Ministry of Health at the 20th annual academic conference of China Association of Medical Equipment.
As reported, the aim is to support primary care institutes on basic equipment procurement, establish more disease control institutes, occupational disease prevention institutes and women's and children's health care institutes with essential equipment, as well as improve the emergent medical service system in rural villages with gradual increase in the number of ambulances and essential first-aid equipment. Besides, adding health education equipment for in primary care and hygiene centers and adding equipment in medical and health incubation centers are also being considered.
According to the report, for this year the Chinese government has arranged the following: RMB720 million on the emergent medical service system in rural villages, RMB500 million on centers for training general practice doctors, RMB1.25 billion on regional medical centers, RMB250 million on distant medical consultation in Central and Western China, RMB1.7 billion on provincial pediatrics hospitals in Central and Western China, RMB4.25 billion on women's and children's health care centers in in Central and Western China, as well as RMB165 million on tuberculosis hospitals.
During the 11th Five-year Plan period, the Chinese government invested a total of more than RMB20 billion on medical equipments, with developments focused on equipping medical equipment in primary care and public health institutes in rural villages in Central and Western China, according to the report.
The next step for Ministry of Health will be to promote the management and purchase of specialized medical equipment.
In addition, RMB100 million will be allocated on the surveillance and assessment of food safety, of which the main priority will be on improving radiation testing equipment, food born disease detection equipment, reference laboratory and illegal food additives testing equipment at provincial level.
