Bayer MaterialScience develops new PC blend for medical applications

Apr 1, 2010
Bayer MaterialScience has expanded its portfolio of PC/ABS (polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) blends with the launch of Bayblend M850XF.

Baybend M850XF is recommended for opaque medical applications, such as components for surgical instruments, diagnostic equipments, systems administering drugs and intravenous systems. The product is particularly suitable for injection molding thin-walled components.

Bayblend M850XF offers the balanced combination of processability and physical properties required for components used in medical and diagnostic equipment," explained Markus Krieter, Expert - Applications in Medical Technology at Bayer MaterialScience.

The company claims that in addition to its impact resistance, stiffness, dimensional and color stability, heat resistance and processing properties, this product grade satisfies the biocompatibility requirements of ISO 10933 Part 1 as modified by the FDA (Federal Drug Administration). The new Bayblend grade for medical applications is suitable for sterilization using ethylene oxide (EtO), gamma radiation and electron rays.
