IVL and Coca-Cola donate PPE suits made from rPET bottles in Thailand

Source:Adsale Plastics Network Date :2021-12-10 Editor :JK

The Coca-Cola system in Thailand, which comprises ThaiNamthip Ltd., HaadThip Plc. and Coca-Cola (Thailand) Ltd., together with Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL) and Trash Lucky, an environmental startup, handed over 1,500 PPE suits made from recycled PET bottles.

The high-quality PPE suits were donated to the Department of Health Services in Thailand's southernmost provinces, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, to support medical personnel at the forefront of the COVID-19 pandemic response.

Valued at 750,000 baht, the contribution is part of the 'Coke Recycle Me with Trash Lucky' campaign. The parties encouraged consumers to separate out their recyclables at home - including post-consumer PET bottles - with chances to win special prizes from Trash Lucky. The prizes were sponsored by Coca-Cola.

The campaign has so far collected over 400 kilograms of post-consumer PET plastic bottles or approximately 27,000 pieces of 600 ml bottles for recycling. The collected empty bottles were converted to high-quality yarn at IVL's recycling plant in Nakhon Pathom and the yarn was woven into 100% recycled polyester fabric to produce 1,500 Level 2 PPE suits.

Level 2 PPE suits are water-repellent and have hydrostatic pressure properties with a resistance to infiltration by a coronavirus. This type of PPE suit is suitable for the treatment of low-risk and medium-risk patients. They are reusable and washable up to 20 times.

"We encourage everyone to separate out and recycle their empty containers through programs like this,” Nuntivat Thamhatai, Public Affairs, Communications and Sustainability Director at Coca-Cola (Thailand) Ltd., remarked. “We’ve also added the prominent message of 'Recycle Me' on the package labels of all our sparkling brands in Thailand to remind consumers to recycle the bottle after they’ve enjoyed the drink."

Yash Lohia, Chief Sustainability Officer at Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), said, "IVL is delighted that our partners Coca-Cola and Trash Lucky are part of the recycling and providing help to the three southernmost provinces in need of PPE suits to protect their medical personnel."

"Trash Lucky's mission is to incentivize people to recycle and divert plastics from landfills and oceans. We have collaborated with various organizations to educate the public on waste sorting and the benefits of recycling. We want to make recycling a habit for people," Nattapak Atichartakarn, Co-founder and CEO of Trash Lucky Ltd., added.
