Technical seminar on selection of high-value medical polymer successfully held at CPRJ Conference

On the second day (Nov 5) of the 4th Edition CPRJ Medical Plastics and Rubber Conference & Showcase, a technical seminar was hosted by Bluesail Medical. 


The company was established in 2002 and is a listed medical device company with a complete development portfolio of consumables. It has four major business divisions, including Protection Division, Cardiovascular Division, Minimally Invasive Surgery Division and Nursing Division.


Bluesail Medical has been working to expand its high-end medical device product line, so as to meet the global demand of the supply chain. A multinational medical device business layout has been set up by the company, which has eight R&D platforms, a 24-hour R&D system and four manufacturing centers.

During the seminar, Dr. Andy Yin, R&D Director at Bluesail Medical, and his team discussed the selection of high-value medical polymers and the technical difficulties in molding process for Polymer Prosthetic Heart Valve and Balloon Dilatation Catheter.

 

Aortic valve stenosis is a common heart valve disease which mostly happens to the elderly and the mortality rate is quite high. When it progresses to severe symptomatic aortic valve stenosis, the patient needs to be treated with valve replacement. With the global population ageing, the number of patients suffering from this disease is rising.

According to Dr. Andy Yin, China's treatment for this disease has just started and there is insufficiency of corresponding medical equipment. He noted that the supply of heart valves used for treating aortic valve stenosis have long been monopolized by foreign companies, however, there are more product substitution made in China now.

 

He believes the production and R&D challenges for the medical polymer valves, in terms of materials and molding, can be solved by collaboration between upstream and downstream industries.

 

Besides, Dr. Andy Yin unveiled that Bluesail Medical plans to build headquarters integrating R&D, production and sales in Shanghai in 2024, as the city is a center for R&D and manufacturing of high-value medical consumables and high-end medical devices.
