Trelleborg unveils lightweight fire-resistant material for EV battery box

Trelleborg’s applied technologies operation has unveiled its new ultra-lightweight fire-resistant material at the recent inaugural International Composites Summit.

 

Neil O’Keeffe, Technical Director at Trelleborg’s operation presented the novel FRV material for use in electric vehicle (EV) battery protection and increased fire risk applications, highlighting its unique flame-resistant properties.

Kerry Lyons, Global Business Manager for Trelleborg’s applied technologies operation, said, “Weighing just 1.2 kg/m2, FRV is ultra-lightweight and extremely flexible. The material is capable of shaping to fit areas of any size, or for draping or wrapping around difficult profiles. When combined with FR1500 panels, it creates a lightweight, protective solution that is perfect for EV battery boxes and enclosures, or as a stand-alone option for increased fire risk applications.”

 

Trelleborg’s FRV material is flame-resistant to +1100°C for up to 90 minutes, with no burn through or expansion during a fire. FRV requires no ongoing maintenance once in situ and is easy to transport and install, making it suitable for both new and upgraded applications.
