Aesthetics the X factor in a new consumer behavior era

Regarding packaging design and market situation of fast-moving baby goods, Leo Xin, Director of Strategic Purchasing of Babycare, commented that the recent three-child policy in China has brought positive impact to the market which is expected to grow at a faster rate in the following years.

He expects the packaging of fast-moving baby goods will be more attractive because today's young parents pay more attention to the aesthetics of the products.

According to the observation of Cui Xiaoliang, Director of Product Development of INTO YOU, portability and miniaturization are the major trends of cosmetic lip product packaging.

She further pointed out that the packaging design of cosmetic lip products are more diversified and bold while the packaging materials are more environmentally friendly, such as mono-material lipstick tube, all-plastic packaging, and increased use of PCR plastics.

From sustainable product design to close-loop

To demonstrate Dow’s recyclable packaging design and its achievement of closing the loop, Tony Yang, End Use Marketing Manager and Food & Specialty Packaging Market Development Manager for Greater China, Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics, introduced some product examples in his presentation.

Dow’s INNATE TF80 biaxially oriented PE resin, with a unique molecular structure design, can be used to produce TF-BOPE film with a stretching ratio of 5x9 on an industrial BOPP line. It is recyclable and can replace BOPA, BOPP or BOPET. Besides, Dow has also developed a circular business model with recycling solutions to reuse the packaging materials.

Daniel Liu, Head of R&D Innovation Center of Kraft Heinz China, elaborated the company’s corporate social responsibility related to sustainable packaging, including the commitment to phase out all PVC/PVDC packaging materials by 2025 and the use of transparent PET for replacing colored PET.

For flexible packaging with multi-layer materials, Kraft Heinz is also looking for alternative technical solutions to turn the packaging into a single polyolefin structure.

In his presentation, Mirko Turrina, General Manager at Goglio (Tianjin) Packaging Co., Ltd., presented the company’s sustainable packaging solutions following the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principles. For example, Goglio is working on lightweight packaging, making use of mono-material and barrier technology in packaging for easier recycling. It is also developing compostable packaging with high barrier properties.

Moreover, the company will adopt more new sustainable materials (for laminates, valves and other plastic accessories), advanced technology and integrated lines.

Dr. Jack Chen, R&D Director-Technology & Sustainability of Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific, mentioned about the innovation and sustainable development of Amcor in daily chemical and food flexible packaging.

In particular, Amcor’s stand-up pouch made from a recyclable structure of TOPP/CPP has heat-resistant PP surface layer and low-temperature heat-sealing PP formula, making it suitable for liquid packaging used in personal care and household detergent, among others.

Mike Wang, Innovation & Development Manager, ALBEA China CRP of ALBEA Group, introduced the company’s green innovations in cosmetic packaging. One of  the innovatiions is the redesigning screw cap of the hose where the diameter of the screw cap is shortened from 2.5cm to 1.33cm and. The thickness of the nozzle is also reduced from 450um to 350um, leading to a decrease in the use of plastics by 35%.

ALBEA also reduces the use of plastics in packaging design, providing reusable and refillable packaging, using recyclable materials, and increasing the application of bio-based materials, he emphasized.

Talking about sustainable packaging in household detergent, Wang Longcheng, Senior Packaging Engineer (Manager) at Guangzhou Liby Enterprise Group Co., Ltd., stated that the company is realizing green packaging through decreasing its use of plastics, utilizing biodegradable and compostable plastics, and turning to mono-material.

Among Liby's products, the concentrated laundry bead is made from PVA water-soluble film and sustainable liquid detergent, and its packaging is made completely from PE.

In his sharing, Zeng Song, Vice General Manager at Dongguan Bouteille Resources Management Co., Ltd., a branch of Guangdong INTOP industrial Holding Co., Ltd, analyzed the current challenge and opportunity for the Chinese recycling industry.

He commented that the recycling policies are clear enough, but they lack financial motivation. In addition, some industry regulations for recycling have not been confirmed. There is still the problem of high input of plastic waste and low output of recyclates. He then called for more transparent packaging in the packaging industry in order to improve the social recycling system.

In his presentation, Zhang Wenkang, Marketing Engineer, JCtimes Group, introduced the world’s first 2.5D Multi-layer Co-extrusion Analysis System developed by the company. The analytical calculations for multi-layer films of the system are more accurate than conventional analytical methods, and result data can be obtained in a short time.

As said, the system breaks through the mesh setting of the thinner die lip opening, directly and accurately calculates the wide die head, and processes analytical calculation of the real simulation of the film die head.
