Making impossible possible: Inline PET/PE film recycling with EVO Fusion by Reifenhäuser

Reifenhäuser offers EVO Fusion line with twin-screw technology that allows the recycling of PET/PE laminates, providing a solution for film manufacturers to achieve circularity.

Challenges to recycle PET/PE laminates

Classic material combination for popular stand-up pouches is PET/PE. The two films are produced individually and then bonded together.

PET provides good rigidity and appearance while PE serves as a sealing film. Although this combination delivers outstanding functionality, it is difficult to recycle due to the chemical incompatibility between PET and PE, as well as printed packaging with components such as color pigments, additives and various binders.

EVO Fusion line enables film manufacturers to recycle PET/PE laminates.

Twin-screw technology helps overcome challenges

EVO Fusion line makes use of twin-screw technology in which twin-screw extruders break down and distribute the components of the input material much better than single-screw extruders. With outstanding mixing effect, it is possible to distribute PET content of 10-40%, which is common for laminates, evenly in a PE matrix, thus creating a homogenous mixture.

EVO Fusion also solves the challenge of degassing from printing ink. Twin-screw extruders offer a significantly larger free surface in the outgassing zone than single-screw extruders. The surface is also renewed much faster, so that a high degassing performance is achieved.

Direct applied and quality maintained

Previously, 2% of scrap is produced during the manufacturing of film and up to 15% is produced during the production of packaging. With EVO Fusion, the waste can be recycled and used as post-industrial recyclate.

Producers can use EVO Fusion to turn their PET/PE scrap directly back into a new film that can be laminated against a PET film. This technology is particularly useful for producers with extrusion and converting under one roof.

"With EVO Fusion, high quality is maintained. Downcycling, which is otherwise common, is not an issue. We have already worked with customers to produce films 20µm thick, which are ideal as outer packaging for hygiene products or dishwasher tabs," explained Christoph Lettowsky, Product Manager at Reifenhäuser Blown Film.
