For the first time, Covestro’s Makrolon RE polycarbonate is used in the manufacturing of switches, plugs and multimedia sockets for ABB’s SAGATM product range.

Makrolon RE polycarbonate is applied in producing switches and sockets from ABB.

More on Makrolon RE

The Makrolon RE variant used by ABB is colored in signal white (RAL 9003). Characterized by excellent UV stability, the solution easily passed a test that simulates two years of horizontal, two-dimensional UV exposure under northern European light conditions.

Its electrical properties also meet all electrical safety requirements, such as high dielectric strength and tracking resistance.

In addition, Makrolon RE is climate-neutral, according to verified life cycle assessment based on ISO standards 14040/14044. Raw materials used in the synthesis of its starting materials are also largely derived from mass-balanced organic waste and residues, such as used cooking oils and fats. Their proportion in the compound is over 80%.

As a drop-in solution, Makrolon RE can replace fossil-based counterparts in ongoing production processes without having to change processing parameters on the injection molding machines.

SAGATM range from ABB

ABB manufactures the majority of SAGATM range in its climate-neutral factory in Porvoo, Finland. With highly efficient energy management system, the plant uses only renewable energy and processes low-emission materials such as Makrolon RE.

Around 75% of SAGATM range is currently manufactured with attributed bio-circular materials. In the long term, this will reduce annual emissions by around 400 tons of CO2 equivalents.

The SAGATM range will initially be marketed in Northern Europe.
