China has experienced rapid industrialization and economic growth over the past few decades, leading to significant expansion in its plastics industry with production capacity increased substantially.

China is the world's largest plastic producer by far, accounting for nearly one-third of global plastics production, according to research platform Statista. Several factors contribute to China's prominence as a plastics producer.

China has access to abundant sources of raw materials needed for plastics production, including petroleum, natural gas, and various chemical feedstocks. The availability of these resources has facilitated the growth of the Chinese plastics industry.

At the same time, the country has developed a robust manufacturing infrastructure, which supports the large-scale production of plastics and high market demand of plastics driven by various industries such as packaging, automotive, electronics and construction.

Prominent provinces and city hubs

Several provinces in China, with their important city hubs, are particularly have significant contributions to the development of the country's plastics industry.

Shandong Province:

Located in eastern China, Shandong Province has access to abundant sources of raw materials essential for production of plastic materials. It is also home to several industrial clusters specializing in different stages of plastics production and thus has a well-established plastics supply chain. Cities like Qingdao and Yantai are notable for their plastics production activities.

Qingdao is a notable production hub for modified plastics. The city has a well-developed plastics industry and is home to several producers specializing in modified plastics, particularly for the automotive and packaging industries.
