Sustainable development has become a global consensus and a driving force for economic recovery. Focusing on finding new development opportunities for the plastic recycling industry in the context of economic and environmental challenges, the 5th Edition CHINAPLAS x CPRJ Plastics Recycling and Circular Economy Conference and Showcase was grandly held today (World Earth Day) in Shanghai, China.

About 1,000 industry professionals participated in this CHINAPLAS’ concurrent event, they come from industry associations, renowned companies, and leading end-user brands, such as Foreign Environmental Cooperation Center of Ministry of Ecology and Environment, China Packaging Federation, Plastic Recycling Association of CRRA, Global Impact Coalition, European Bioplastics, AMCHAM Sustainability and CSR Committee, KAO, P&G, Panasonic, PEPSICO, DOW, Lyondellbasell, NESTE, SABIC, Wanhua Chemical, etc.

 

Hosted by CHINAPLAS and Adsale Plastics Network, the grand event comprised one main forum and four parallel sessions, bringing together over 60 inspiring presentations on recycling industry outlook, circular economy development, consumer market trends, processing machinery and low-carbon material technologies, and so on.

 

In addition, the “Summit Dialogue: Circular Economy for Plastics and Closed-loop Recycling” and four “Talk of the Industry” salons were also organized.

Policy support and technological innovation drive strong development


Plastic circular economy has surpassed the industry scope and become a topic of common concern for the whole society. – Ada Leung, General Manager, Adsale Exhibition Services Ltd.

At her welcoming speech, Ada Leung stated that the plastic circular economy has surpassed the industry scope and become a topic of common concern for the whole society. The global policy is directed towards the future of sustainable plastic development. The global recycled plastic market is expected to exceed US$52.7 billion in 2023 and is expected to exceed US$114.8 billion by 2033, with an average CAGR of 8.1%. The rapid development of packaging, consumer electronics, and construction industries will drive the application of recycled plastics, especially in emerging country markets such as China, India, and Brazil.

Junxiang Xu emphasized the importance of circular economy to sustainable development and ecological management, it is the key to achieve positive interaction among ecological system, production process and economic growth. Although filled with challenges, China achieves progress in plastic waste recycling, the recycling rate in 2023 reached 19 million tons, a year-on-year growth of 5.6%. He also pointed out the problems faced in the industry, such as the limited scale of company, increased recycling cost, insufficient high-end demand, etc, which need to be solved with joint effort.

Xuezhi Xiao introduced the background and progress of negotiations on international legal instruments to end plastic pollution, as well as the current international progress in plastic pollution control. He believes that China should advance its plastic pollution policy towards the direction of full chain management, actively promoting the international community to jointly respond.

Roberto Ferrigno shared the latest developments in the European bioplastic market and policies. After 30 years of development, this industry has formed a mature value chain. EUBP hopes to use bio-based and renewable biomaterials to drive innovation in the plastic industry, reshaping the value chain. Data shows that global bioplastic production is on the rise, and it is expected to increase from 2.18 million tons in 2023 to 7.43 million tons by 2028, with broad development prospects.

Yonggang Wang stated that in 2023, China's plastic industry will become more large-scale, intensive, green, and high-value, and cooperation between upstream and downstream industrial chains will be strengthened. The main contradiction in the industry is overcapacity of low-end production and insufficient supply at the high-end. Favorable international environment, continuous support from national policies, and sustainable development goals from companies bring opportunities for the recycled plastic industry. The establishment of the joint working group on green recycled plastic supply chain aims to work together to promote China's plastic circular economy.

From a technical perspective, Marco Zhong introduced how to achieve the utilization of China's food-grade rPET. The Joint Working Group on Sustainable Development +CFSA have carried out a series of work since 2020, including pollutant surveys, challenging experiments, migration testing, and full life cycle environmental impact assessment (LCA). It indicates that if rPET in China is processed through standardized collection, sorting, and decontamination processes, the pollutants can be effectively removed, achieving safe usage.

Charlie Tan shared his insights on ways for the chemical industry to achieve net zero emissions. GIC is currently focusing on the R&D of plastic waste treatment technologies, such as the Circular Refining (CPR) project for plastic waste, aiming at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the chemical and incineration industries. In addition, GIC also addresses seven global impact issues, including reducing gas emissions for global warming potential, energy transition, process decarbonization, polymer recyclability, end-to-end transparency and certification, alternative carbon source utilization, and chemical safety and pollution.

Richard Brubaker emphasized that the circular economy needs to address practical issues and address global challenges through the recycling of products and materials. He pointed out that it is crucial to understand each stage from design to recycling in promoting a circular economy in China. Reducing textile waste through environmentally friendly design, reducing production waste, optimizing warehouse management, and improving recycling efficiency are key. Brubaker believes that regulations, economy, design, and material innovation are the driving forces for promoting the implementation of a circular economy, effectively addressing waste issues and promoting sustainable development.

Dr. Agiana Her Visnhu Ditakristi shared her Indonesian company's experience in recycling marine plastics and protecting the marine environment. She mentioned that marine pollution caused by discarded plastics has seriously threatened the living environment of marine organisms. The microplastic particles generated by the decomposition of discarded plastics will also accumulate along the food chain, ultimately affecting the entire ecosystem and human health. The company is committed to marine plastic recycling and applying advanced technologies to environmental protection.

Taiying Wang emphasized that the EU's new green policy has brought development opportunities and challenges to China's automotive industry, especially the plastic industry. He pointed out that plastics play a crucial role in the lightweight and cost-effectiveness of automobiles, and the growth of China's automobile exports, especially new energy vehicles, foreshadows the trend of globalization in the industry. Facing new policy's environmental and energy efficiency standards, Chinese enterprises need to strengthen their understanding and take measures, such as improving energy efficiency and integrating into low-carbon ecosystems, to adapt to market access conditions, seize opportunities, and respond to challenges.

Zhongwei Chen shared how the ANTA Group explores low-carbon and circular businesses. ANTA promises to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and to achieve zero virgin plastics, carbon emissions, and landfill of self-produced waste, 50% sustainable products and packaging, 50% renewable energy substitution, and 50% use of sustainable raw materials in its own facilities by 2030.

Francois Jenny introduced the changes in global plastic production and waste scale, the development of plastic recycling industry in Europe, regulatory policies for sustainable development and plastic recycling in Europe, and Veolia's full process solutions for plastic recycling. Based on the development of the plastic recycling industry and policy adjustments in Europe, Veolia has developed ready-to-use recycled resins to meet various industry needs, expecting to be applied in the plastic circular economy in the Asia Pacific region, especially in China.

Mars China is committed to redesigning its product portfolio to achieve recyclability, including developing biodegradable composite paper packaging, reducing packaging weight, using post-consumer plastics, using mono-material design for easier recycle, and reusable packaging.

Astrid Hoffmann-Leist introduced the company's progress in designing sustainable bottle cap. They are committed to using 100% renewable materials to achieve carbon neutral operations. United caps uses physical foam technology to reduce product weight and enhance sustainability through life cycle assessment. It also uses advanced recycling technology to convert waste into new plastics, while emphasizing clear labeling to increase consumer willingness to pay.

Yan Zhu shared KAO's ESG vision of "Life, Living, Ecology". KAO actively carried out packaging technology innovation such as structural process optimization, new detection solutions, supercritical forming, and new material development. The company ultimately achieved a CO2 reduction rate of over 20% from 2021 to 2024.

On its low-carbon journey, P&G is committed to achieving carbon neutrality in operation by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2040. P&G upgraded its intelligent supply chain and improved its low-carbon operation level. Its product packaging promotes sustainable development through mono-material, recycled materials, bio-based materials, material substitution, source reduction, and supplementary packaging.

Peikun Huang stated that Meituan launched the Blue Mountain Project in 2017, committed to promoting environmental protection in the food delivery industry. It is the first action plan in the industry to focus on environmental protection. The project places equal emphasis on “Reducing, Replacing, and Recycling”, promoting environmentally friendly packaging and advanced recycling throughout the entire lifecycle. Its goal is to build a green packaging supply chain by 2025, providing all businesses with recyclable, biodegradable, or reusable food delivery packaging solutions.

Ausell actively participates in the formulation of national standards, promotes the application of PCR materials in multiple fields through refined recycling and processing processes, and assists in the development of low-carbon circular economy.

Ethan He introduced Engel's two-step injection process from sheet raw materials to products, skipping the granulation process. This process separates melting and injection, and adds continuous filtration and exhaust devices, supplemented by Engel's excellent intelligent algorithms and control system. Users only need to adjust a small number of parameters to achieve efficient production of the entire process from sheet raw materials to products, greatly improving plastic circulation efficiency.

It includes a series of companies with expertise in waste generation, recycling, sorting and processing. GREENCIRCLE is based on the textile and clothing industry and will further expand to related industries such as PET bottles and thin films.
