BASF introduces industry-first PBAT with renewable feedstock

Jun 13, 2024

BASF expanded its portfolio of certified compostable biopolymers to include ecoflex F Blend C1200 BMB, a biomass-balanced (BMB) polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) which is commonly used in the compounding of biopolymers.

With the biomass-balanced biopolymer ecoflex BMB (PBAT), BASF now offers the packaging industry a way to increase the use of renewable feedstocks.

Fossil raw materials are replaced with renewable feedstock at the beginning of the value chain. The renewable feedstock comes from waste and residual biomass, and is attributed to the ecoflex grade via a mass balance approach which is certified according to REDcert2 and ISCC PLUS.

The BMB ecoflex not only reduces the use of fossil resources, but also offers 60% lower Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) than the standard ecoflex F Blend C1200.

ecoflex F Blend C1200 BMB is identical to the conventional grade in properties, quality and certification. As a drop-in solution, the new ecoflex do not require re-qualify the applications made of ecoflex BMB, reformulate the compounds or adapt existing manufacturing processes.

The new solution with renewable feedstock can be applied to the packaging industry, allowing the industry to reduce fossil resource consumption.
