In its latest market report, titled “BOPP Films – The Global Market 2024”, AMI provided first-hand industry insight with data analysis on the current BOPP film market and emerging BOPE film in packaging industry.

BOPP film remains important in direct food packaging

The report concludes that BOPP films remain important in direct food packaging application, as they provide food security and convenience for packed food. Data shows that 58% of BOPP film demand is used for direct food packaging, and 65% if labels are also included.

Pie chart on the global demand for BOPP films in 2023.

Snacks are with the largest proportion among the food category. This may account for the need for convenience in the busy on-the-go lifestyles, encouraging more snacking occasions.

On the other hand, current inflation pressures and geopolitical uncertainty caused more demand on cheaper food staples such as pasta and noodles, which commonly use high volumes of BOPP film for simple and efficient packaging and display.

The report also forecasts that snacks and other dried foods will provide opportunity for growth in BOPP film consumption.

AMI’s report also studied the market of battery separator films. With green industry and new energy becoming increasingly important, the use of BOPP in this segment is explored.

BOPE film emerges for more recycling

In flexible packaging sector, BOPE film develops and starts emerging due to its mono-material structure and increasing recycling commitments from brand owners.

As BOPE features mechanical recyclability, established PE film recycling streams across many countries can be fully utilized. Sustainability legislation, such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation in Europe, also plays an important role to the packaging development.

Investors in BOPE film extrusion installs hybrid BOPE/BOPP extrusion lines which can use both BOPE and BOPP materials. Others have modified existing lines to meet market demands.
