KOSÉ brings bio-based materials into cosmetics container

Sep 23, 2024

KOSÉ has collaborated with various supply chain partners to make inner part of cosmetic container with renewable materials applying a mass balancing approach, which is said as the first in the Japanese cosmetics industry.

SEKKISEI CLEAR WELLNESS Overnight Cream, the skin care product of the Japanese cosmetics company, has the inner part of the container made of polypropylene (PP) with renewable bio-based feedstock Neste RE.

In addition to Neste, other partners that have facilitated the application include Itochu Plastics, SK Geo Centric and Yoshida Cosmeworks.

Collaborating with supply chain partners, KOSÉ has made the inner part of the SEKKISEI container with renewable materials.

“The SEKKISEI pilot serves as a blueprint for us,” explains Seiji Kawano, Corporate Strategy Dept. Sustainability Strategy Office/General Manager at KOSÉ. “The mass balance approach allows us to start with smaller amounts of renewable content that we can then gradually ramp-up. We plan to expand the use of renewable materials to other products and brands.”

“It’s crucial for us to understand what exactly is required from the brands,” explains Maria Carcolé, Head of Brand Owner Management at Neste Renewable Polymers and Chemicals. “The earlier we do that, the better we can build and support the entire supply chain – and we can also help companies like KOSÉ get a good understanding of what’s doable and what’s not.”
