Vianode, a leading advanced battery materials company, has unveiled its first high-performance solution utilizing recycled graphite as part of its next-generation material series.

This innovative product, derived from recycled battery-grade graphite, is designed to address the growing demand for sustainable electric vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing.

Anode graphite constitutes the largest component of lithium-ion batteries by weight, with approximately 70 kilograms of graphite used per EV. Conventional production of anode graphite accounts for an average of 20% of battery cell emissions, making emission reduction during production one of the most pressing challenges for the EV and battery industry.

In anode materials, a distinction is made between synthetic and natural anode graphite, both of which are commonly used in lithium-ion batteries. Vianode produces the world’s most sustainable synthetic anode graphite through a proprietary high-temperature process, while natural graphite is sourced from carbon-rich rock formations.

Vianode’s Via ONE, the world’s most sustainable full-scale synthetic anode graphite plant, began production in 2024 with a record-low climate impact of 1.9 kg CO equivalents (COe) per kilogram of graphite. This represents a reduction of over 90% in emissions compared to conventional production methods.

Vianode launches first recycled graphite product

“Vianode’s proprietary recycling process allows us to recover both types of anode graphite, mitigating the environmental challenges traditionally associated with sourcing natural graphite. We preserve the natural graphite content and enhance product quality through improved homogeneity and customized performance specifications tailored to specific customer needs,” explained Bridget Deveney, VP of Product Development and Applications at Vianode.

The introduction of recycled graphite marks the next step toward Vianode’s goal of achieving 1.0 kg COe per kilogram of graphite by 2030 through more efficient production and material utilization. For automotive and battery manufacturers, this product enables the production of electric vehicles with lower emissions, improved battery efficiency, faster charging capabilities, and extended range.

It will also enable battery and EV manufacturers in North America and Europe to reduce their dependence on imported materials while complying with US, Canadian, and EU regulations that encourage the use of domestic feedstock. Additionally, the product supports the EU’s goal of achieving 25% recycling of synthetic graphite by 2030.

The Vianode Technology Center in Kristiansand, Norway, is currently conducting research on additional recycled products, aiming to develop the most sustainable anode graphite and establish a truly circular battery value chain in North America and Europe.
