(Interview) Bluepha: Pioneering a sustainable commercial path for biotech materials

Amid global trends and policy shifts to reduce plastic use, biotech materials are emerging as a key alternative to traditional plastics. As a leader in industrial and consumer biotechnology, Shanghai Bluepha Technology has been advancing the commercialization of bio-based materials and solutions through continuous optimization of biomanufacturing technologies.

Looking ahead to 2025, Zhang Haoqian, Founder and CEO of Bluepha Co., Ltd., believes that the long-term trend is clear, even with short-term uncertainties. Since EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan has increased subsidies to 35%, there is a growing tendency for consumers to accept eco-friendly products, and the replacement of petroleum-based plastics with biodegradable materials is accelerating.

A recent U.S. executive order signed by President Trump, for example, directs federal agencies to cease purchasing paper straws and ensure their removal from government facilities. It also mandates a "national strategy to phase out paper straws" within 45 days, aiming to alleviate nationwide mandates for their use. Such policy fluctuations could slow regional transitions.

Bluepha offers bio-based materials and solutions for various applications.

“The widespread adoption of eco-friendly materials requires a balance of technology, cost, and policy,” Zhang emphasizes. Bluepha strategy focuses on enhancing the bioconversion efficiency of cell factories, lowering biomanufacturing costs, and refining material processing and performance. These efforts aim to narrow the price gap, processing challenges, and performance disparities with conventional plastics, thereby boosting market competitiveness.

Over the next 2-3 years, Bluepha will leverage Synbio OS™—its proprietary ultra-high-throughput platform for strain development and fermentation process optimization—to accelerate the commercialization of biomanufacturing technologies "from lab to factory." Success depends on three pillars:

  1. Deeply understanding market needs for next-generation materials and solutions;

  2. Innovating cost-effective solutions to meet these demands;

  3. Most crucially, delivering tangible value to markets and end-users.

Technology for the benefit of all—this is Bluepha’s vision: To Empower Humanity with Synthetic Biology.
