Teijin Limited announced today that Sigma Corporation, the renowned Japanese optical equipment manufacturer, has incorporated Teijin’s biomass-derived polycarbonate (PC) resin into the production of lens barrels for its interchangeable camera lenses.

Teijin’s ISCC PLUS-certified biomass PC resin, produced using the mass balance approach, delivers the same mechanical properties as traditional petroleum-based PC resin while significantly lowering carbon emissions. This allows Sigma to maintain the high performance and durability expected from its lenses while transitioning to a more sustainable material solution.

The new eco-friendly lenses are scheduled to enter the market during the first half of this fiscal year, marking a significant step in Sigma’s sustainability initiatives.

Teijin showcased Sigma’s lens barrels made with this innovative biomass PC resin at CHINAPLAS 2025, taking place from April 15 to 18 in Shenzhen, China. Visitors to Booth 17K71 will have the opportunity to examine the application of this sustainable material in high-performance optical products.

Since its founding in 1961, Sigma has built a reputation for precision craftsmanship, with all manufacturing and supply chain operations based entirely in Japan. The company, headquartered in Kanagawa Prefecture with production facilities in Fukushima, distributes its lenses and cameras to more than 85 countries worldwide.

By adopting Teijin’s biomass PC resin, Sigma reinforces its commitment to reducing environmental impact across material selection, product development, and manufacturing processes.

The mass balance approach ensures traceability of sustainable feedstock throughout complex production processes, enabling manufacturers to reduce reliance on fossil-based resources while maintaining product integrity. This partnership between Teijin and Sigma represents a meaningful advancement in the optical industry’s shift toward greener manufacturing practices.
