In a recent interview, Birgit Murr, Consul (Commercial Affairs) & Head of the Austrian Consulate General in Guangzhou, shared her insights on the current market landscape against the backdrop of rising tariffs and economic uncertainties.

Murr advocates for a positive, proactive approach in the plastics industry. She encourages companies to focus on innovation and technological development rather than being consumed by external pressures. By channeling their energies into enhancing products and processes, businesses can pave the way for resilience and sustainable growth.

Birgit Murr, Consul (Commercial Affairs) & Head of the Austrian Consulate General in Guangzhou, talked to Adsale Plastics Network at CHINAPLAS 2025.

Increasingly competitive Chinese market

Murr highlighted the significant shifts in the economic landscape over recent years. Austrian companies operating in China are facing intensified competition and a more cost-sensitive consumer base. “Chinese competitors are very strong; for foreign companies, the competition is much more pronounced than before. Our Chinese customers are also more price-conscious,” she explained.

Meanwhile, she remarked that the pace of change is accelerating, with uncertainties stemming from trade conflicts involving China, the US, and other nations. Murr emphasized the need for companies to maintain a visible presence in the market and actively engage with customers to demonstrate their value in this rapidly changing environment.

In response to these challenges, Murr suggested that Austrian companies explore alternative sourcing for materials and components, as well as leverage their strengths in maintenance and customer relations, areas where they are well-regarded.

There were 14 Austrian companies at the Austrian Pavilion at CHINAPLAS 2025, presenting their cutting-edge technologies and solutions.

Responding with technological innovation

Murr underscored the importance of technological innovation as a strategic response to market challenges. She urged Austrian companies to advance their technologies that are reshaping the plastics industry. “AI (artificial intelligence) is an important topic for Austrian companies. They are integrating AI into their production processes and product offerings,” she noted. However, she also pointed out that Austrian technologies are often highly customized, which remains crucial for competitiveness.

Sustainability is another key focus for the Austrian plastics industry. Murr highlighted that government incentives and greater customer acceptance of recycled materials in Austria position these companies to lead in recycling and energy efficiency solutions.

Navigating complexities with a positive mindset

While acknowledging the daunting nature of external factors like tariffs, Murr stressed the importance of fostering strong customer relationships and prioritizing technological advancements. “It is very bad if politics influences business. We should focus on our business and not get too entangled in political issues,” she said.

She emphasized the necessity for open communication and collaboration between suppliers and customers to effectively address challenges together, especially in the face of geopolitical uncertainties.

Murr’s message is clear: while tariffs cannot be ignored, the plastics industry faces numerous other changes and challenges that warrant attention. “Companies should concentrate on what they can control and focus on solutions that are essential for their future business,” she advised.

She also emphasized the need for innovations such as degradable plastics, recycled materials, and energy-efficient production methods. “Rather than worrying about tariffs, businesses should use their time to enhance and develop future technologies. If they remain stagnant, they risk being left behind when opportunities arise,” she cautioned.

Murr’s advocacy for a mindset shift is refreshing. Instead of succumbing to external pressures, companies are encouraged to embrace the opportunities that innovation presents. This proactive approach not only ensures business continuity but also equips companies to thrive in an ever-evolving economic landscape.
