Setogem RD dual-function agent

Setogem RD is an innovative dual-function nucleator and acid scavenger for polypropylenes (PP). It was developed to replace less sustainable additives, such as talc which is showed to contain hazardous substances.

The excellent nucleation performance of Setogem RD helps resin producers control the formation of crystals within the polymer, which results in PP materials with outstanding stiffness, impact strength and isotropic shrinkage. It also provides excellent heat deflection temperature and low creep deformation.

Meanwhile, acid scavenging is an integral property of the product’s composition, offering non-migratory performance even at low use levels. This contributes to a substantial reduction in blooming and migration while ensuring corrosion protection. In addition, the innovative new dual-function molecule has a very low Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint.

Setogem RD is the first launched product from the Setogem platform. Kisuma will be soon launching a series of other fual-function molecules for the polyolefin markets, said Samir El Khoury, Global Product Line Manager Polyolefin Additives at Kisuma Chemicals, at EMG Pre K press conference.

Flame retardant solutions

The flame retardant (FR) market presents supply chain challenges to the polymer industry, according to Zachary Hoffman, Business Developmetn Lead, EMEA, Kisuma Chemicals. The supply of antimony trioxide (ATO) has dropped off due to usage in “higher value” applications (e.g. solar panels) and geopolitical trade issues, which has increased the price in the plastics market, he explained.

Kisuma offers alternative non-toxic solutions to ATO and other FRs as either standalone components or co-synergists with other existing FR chemistries. Before the K fair, the company will be launching its next generation of FR solutions.

Mechanical recycling solutions

Kisuma adopts four pillars of circualr polyolefins, focusing on odor and VOC scavenging (organoleptics), mechanical property retention (physicals), color retention (aesthetics), and gel reduction (aesthetics).

The company continues to develop addtive solutions and synergistic additive blends that can achieve a multitude of optimized performance benefits to upgrade lower quality PCR plastics, mainly polyolefins.

PFAS-free rubber solutions

ECHA and other global regulators are targeting materials containing PFAS like FKM, and future bans could arrive 2-5 years, said Claudia Aguilar Carvalho, Sales Product Manager at Kisuma Chemicals.

It is estimated that around 10-15% of fluoropolymers can be replaced by other materials, she added. Kisuma’s DHT-4 hydrotalcite-based addtive can enhance thermal stability, aging, and fluid resistance of rubbers like ECO, HNBR, and EPDM. It be used as acid scavenger, enabling different rubber matrices to compete where only FKM was used.

DHT-4 helps to reduce PFAS reliance, lower costs, and meet regulatory compliance, while maintaining comparable material performance. Rubber formulations contains DHT-4 can replace FKM partially in moderately aggressive environments, such as automotive sealings, industrial gaskets, and chemical hose applications.
