Kuraray, the global specialty chemicals company headquartered in Japan, will present a broad range of high-tech materials at K 2025. The exhibits are suitable for applications ranging from recyclable packaging and PFAS-free automotive components to soft, safe solutions for hygiene and medical uses.

Automotive applications

 

Kuraray will present innovative and sustainable high-performance materials for demanding applications in the automotive industry.

 

The new PFAS-free GENESTAR™ grades are wear-resistant, low friction, suitable for wear-proof bearings, lightweight drivetrain components and heat management in electric vehicles.

 

KURARAY LIQUID RUBBER has low viscosity and improves the dispersion of fillers in rubber compounds. These improve the rolling resistance of tires and also reduces production time and costs. As an ISCC PLUS-certified reactive plasticizer, it also demonstrably contributes to sustainability in the supply chain.

 

MOWITAL® enables heat separable (reversible) lamination of composite structures. The completely transparent PVB film is ideal for laminating glass, metal, wood, ceramics, polymer fibres, polyurethane foam and many other substrates. It is also available with ISCC PLUS-certified grades, ensuring its circularity and traceability.

PMMA-based products such as PARAPET™ and KURALPHA™ offer solutions for recyclable rear lights, heat-resistant head-up displays and recycling of coated automotive parts as well as parts covered with decorative film.

 

EVAL™ EVOH is used as a barrier layer in hydrogen tank systems to prevent hydrogen permeation. That makes this technology particularly interesting for emission-free drives. It also increases storage capacity, which enhances range and system efficiency.

 

Packaging applications

 

Kuraray offers ISCC PLUS-certified packaging solutions that ensures transparency, traceability, and sustainable practices throughout complex supply chains. Depending on the grade, verified carbon footprint reductions of up to 60% can be achieved with Kuraray’s materials.

 

Additionally, with the upcoming implementation of EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), the company provides concrete solutions to produce ready-to-recycle packaging with functionally equivalents to current materials.

 

At K 2025, visitors can experience Kuraray’s high-performance, sustainable packaging solutions.

 

EVAL™ EVOH is a high-performance oxygen barrier for recyclable mono-material packaging in plastic and paper formats. A 1 mm layer of EVAL™ provides the same gas barrier performance as a 10 m LDPE, enabling ultra-thin, lightweight, and resource-saving multilayer structures. Biocircular ISCC PLUS-certified versions are available.

 

KURARAY POVAL™, EXCEVAL™, ELVANOL™, and MOWIFLEX™ are Kuraray’s polyvinyl alcohols (PVOH) developed for sustainable packaging. They are water-soluble, film-forming, and support recyclable and compostable packaging. Bocircular PVOH products are also available.

 

Renewable PLANTIC film is now also available in pellet form as PLANTIC™ EP. This thermoplastic starch-based, biodegradable and compostable biopolymer features excellent oxygen barrier that helps preserve aroma and product quality. It is also dispersible in water, enabling the separation of multilayers and allowing for easy repulping of paper packaging.

 

MOWITAL® polyvinyl butyral can also be used as an optimal auxiliary in coatings and as a binder for multi-layer packaging products.

 

Hygiene and medical applications

 

Kuraray offers a wide range of solutions for the medical and hygiene industries, from pharmaceuticals and nonwovens, sterile bandages, bandages, masks and surgical caps, to high-quality dental technology. Visitors to K 2025 will be able to see the quality of HYBRAR™ and SEPTON™ at the Kuraray booth.

 

The thermoplastic elastomer HYBRAR™ is characterized by flexibility, dimensional stability, sterilizability and high purity. The material is a more environmentally friendly alternative to PVC. It is used in medical films, adhesives and tubes that need to be robust, transparent and flexible.

 

The granular thermoplastic elastomer SEPTON™ is used as flexible, high-performance materials that ensure safety and comfort. With high stretchability and adjustable, and soft elasticity, SEPTON™ tension is distributed evenly, which is particularly beneficial for baby diapers. It is also chemically pure, meaning it contains no harmful substances, and is odorless and easy to process. A variant of SEPTON™ based on renewable raw materials is now available.
