The world’s largest plastics show – K fair – is approaching. Although it is the world’s largest plastics show, we bet you will have some free time to explore the city of Düsseldorf.

Here are some popular tourist attractions for you to visit during your free time.

Background of Düsseldorf

Located along the River Rhine, Düsseldorf is an international business and financial center. Düsseldorf is a “fascination of variety”. It is famous for its nightlife, carnival, events, shopping and of course, exhibitions. Most destinations can be reached by bus, tramway and subway. You may also choose to walk or cycle around the city.

Altstadt (Old Town)

Almost completely destroyed during World War 2, Altstadt (Old Town) was rebuilt according to historic plans on its foundation walls, making it look like a real historic town.

Today the old town is a popular shopping mall and at night and weekends turns into the so-called “longest bar of the world”. An uncountable number of bars, coffee shops and snug brewing houses are situated here. The old town is the home of “Altbier”, a top-fermented, dark beer that tastes best at the historical brewing houses.

Burgplatz (Castle Square)

Burgplatz (Castle Square) is between the Altstadt (Old Town) and River Rhine. Once upon a time there was the castle of the Earls of Berg, the later duke of Jülich-Kleve-Berg. Later the castle was reconstructed to a baroque palace, which burned down in 1872. In 1888, the ruins were removed completely, only a tower was left.

Burgplatz is also the starting point of the 2,000m long Rheinuferpromenade (Rhine embankment promenade).

Rheinuferpromenade (Rhine embankment promenade)

Rheinuferpromenade links the traditional Altstadt (Old Town) to the modern MedienHafen (Media Harbor) and is lined by coffee shops and bars. The promenade on the bank of River Rhine is one of the most beautiful ones in Germany, and it is situated on the right bank where the sun shines onto this side all day long.

Most gangways for boat trips on River Rhine are situated near to Burgplatz. Many coffee shops offer outdoor seats for better taste of the beautiful scene.

Königsallee (The King’s alley)

Called “Kö” by the locals, Königsallee is the main street of Düsseldorf and consists of two streets divided by a canal. This shopping district is internationally recognized for its plethora high level fashion stores. It is sometimes referred to as the “Champs-Élysées of Germany”.

Along the main boulevard there are many smaller boutiques. German department store chain – Galeria – is situated on the crossing Liesegangstrasse/Schadowstrasse.

MedienHafen (Media Harbor)

At the southern end of the River Rhine promenade is the MedienHafen (Media Harbor). The former harbor was transformed in a quarter with restaurants, bars, coffee shops, discotheques and hotels.

Its flair is based on the mixture of old and new. Protected buildings like depots, quay walls and industrial surroundings stand side by side with modern architecture.

Rheinturm (Rhine Tower)

Rheinturm (Rhine Tower) is a 240.5m high concrete telecommunications tower right on the River Rhine, near the Media Harbor. As the tallest construction in Düsseldorf, it houses a revolving restaurant and an observation deck at a height of 170m.

The observation deck is open to public. As a special attraction, a light sculpture on its shaft works as a clock, said to be the largest digital clock in the world.

Benrath Palace and its park

The pleasure palace in the countryside. Planned and built between 1756 and 1773 by Nicolas de Pigage, the Palace and Park Benrath was constructed as a maison de plaisance for Elector Carl Theodor.

The palace is an overall work of art dating from the late baroque period that combines art, landscaping and nature. It is also home to three museums: the Museum Corps de Logis (located in the palace's main building), the Museum für Gartenkunst (Museum for Landscape Art) and the Naturkundemuseum (Natural Science Museum).

This is where visitors may immerse themselves in the 18th century, follow the footsteps of important landscape artists and take a stroll through local flora and fauna.
