(Interview) Guangdong Simcheng innovates to shine in blue ocean of high-tech film extrusion

Guangdong Simcheng Plastics Machinery, a Chinese cast film extrusion equipment supplier, has more than 20 years of experience in the plastic thin film industry, from manufacturing CPP/CPE/PVB cast film equipment from the beginning, to manufacturing high-tech film equipment for lithium battery separator and PI film, and even automatic packaging machine.

Among them, sales of high-end wide-width CPP/CPE remain the top in the world, setting a standard especially in the food packaging industry. Through printing and pouch making, CPP/CPE thin film is ideal for food packaging, daily necessity packaging, industrial product packaging, and metallized film.

 

As the technology for CPP/CPE cast film in China matures, Simcheng further develops functional film with higher technology demand, including PVB interlayer film and lithium battery separator film.

PVB interlayer film equipment

 

In 2004, Simcheng strategically invest in the R&D of PVB interlayer film equipment. PVB interlayer film features high safety, preventing injuries from shattered glasses. Its high sound insulation and UV blocking performance also make it ideal for laminated glass for construction and automotive, photovoltaic glass, and bullet-proof glass.

 

Back then, China was lack of raw material for PVB film, dependent on imported equipment, and weak in processes integration; some Chinese companies which purchased equipment from Japan lacked processing adjustment ability and led to poor production results.

 

Simcheng targeted at this market demand and developed PVB film through reverse analysis with technical blueprints and film samples.

 

“This strategic move marked our leading position in PVB industry,” commented Zhihong Qin, General Manager of Simcheng. “From the beginning, we weren’t sure about our move but we really want to make a breakthrough in this technology. With this passion and strong will, our technical team was dedicated. Now, we achieve independent production line and system for PVA powder, PVB powder, and PVB film. The technical level leads in the world, resulting true cost effectiveness and technical ability.”

Automatic packaging machine: international cooperation to fill technical gap

 

In 2018, Simcheng started a whole new project – thin film automated packaging machine. The R&D team of this project gathered eight global partners from world-leading suppliers and research teams from universities, including Siemens and German SEW-EURODRIVE.

 

After eight years of technical accumulation and market trial, Simcheng launched automatic packaging machines that meet different market demand, such as vertical and suspended ones. The machines were further developed to third and fifth generation, of which are applied in world-leading BOPP/BOPET companies such as Guangdong Decro Film New Materials and Hengli Petrochemical.

 

This packaging system fills the international market gap and can be seamlessly initegrated with equipment from global suppliers such as Brückner and Lindauer DORNIER.

 

Technological breakthrough in PI film equipment

 

Thanks to its exceptional performance and high value adding characteristic, PI film is widely used in high-end industries including aerospace and aviation, and electronic information, such as for OLED screen. However, its manufacturing process is complicated.

 

“In 2021, we invested in the R&D of bi-oriented stretch film equipment, which is high-end PI film equipment that is rare in the world,” said Qin. Simcheng has established multiple trial line and professional team, focusing on optimizing process and equipment for PI, LCP, PPS, and other high performing material.

After three years of R&D, Simcheng achieved success in developing chemical imine PI film line in 2024, bringing local-made alternatives to customers. At CHINAPLAS 2025, the PI film line for high temperature resistance made its world debut, gathering crowd attention.

The film line wins “Top Ten Technology Trends in Plastics and Rubber in 2025” initiated by Adsale Plastics Network. General Manager Qin accepted the award at CHINAPLAS 2025 onsite.

 

Global R&D team for the global market

 

Simcheng continuously invested on the R&D of integrated system for equipment, process, and service. The company also established a team of professional dedicated to metal surface processing and screw simulation, focusing on basic processes including equipment stability, raw material allocation, and coating uniformity.

 

With strengthened partnership with S&T institutions including Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Dailian University of Technology, University of Science and Technology Liaoning, Germany IKV, Simcheng gathers a global R&D team and set up internship base and laboratory. Professions from the R&D team are from multiple countries, including Japan, Germany, Korea and more.

 

In recent years, Simcheng’s market expands to South-east Asia, Middle East, and Europe. Different from companies focusing on export business, Simcheng highlights “localized support” in its export business, supporting localized process training and after-sales services.

 

Its intelligent factory, set to begin production in 2026, will provide an implementation ground for 200-300 workers. Qin pointed out that Simcheng will continuously invest in nurturing talents for production and R&D.

In addition, Simcheng also contributes to setting global and Chinese standard in multiple area, such as PVB film, lithium battery film, PI film and automated packaging machine.

 

Conclusion

 

“Manufacturing of cast film equipment is the highest in the three major film processing area in China. We must continuously innovate as we do business,” said Qin.

 

Although Chinese-made products are upgrading, there remains lots of bottle-neck projects. Qin explained that these projects are Simcheng’s “Blue Ocean”. The company can only find the true value in market if it continues to innovate.
