C&EN has unveiled its latest ranking of the top 50 chemical companies worldwide for 2025, based on the financial data from the fiscal year 2024.

What changes are reflected in this year’s list? How do the top three companies perform? Which Chinese enterprises made the cut?

Positive signs: Sales steady, profits on the rise

As of 2024, the total chemical sales of the 50 companies on the list reached US$1.014 trillion, reflecting a slight decline of just 0.07% compared to the previous year. It is notable that total sales have remained nearly identical for two consecutive years.

C&EN suggests that this lack of movement might be viewed as an encouraging sign for the industry, given that in 2023 the companies posted a collective 10.7% decline in sales.

Earnings figures also show a positive trend. Among the global top 50 chemical firms, 37 reported earnings, with total profits reaching US$56.8 billion in 2024. This is an increase of 8.1% compared to 2023. In last year's survey, the companies that reported earnings saw them tumble 44.1%.

BASF, Sinopec, and Dow maintain top three positions

This year’s ranking shows no changes in the top three positions compared to last year.

BASF retains the top spot for the sixth consecutive year, reporting chemical sales of US$70.612 billion in 2024. Sinopec follows in second place with sales of US$58.131 billion, while Dow Chemical holds the third position with sales of US$42.964 billion.

For years, BASF, Sinopec, and Dow have consistently occupied the top three spots in the global top 50 chemical firms list. However, both BASF and Dow experienced declines in chemical sales in 2024, whereas Sinopec showed a positive trend with a slight increase of 1.7%.

Tongkun Holdings reports 23.3% sales growth

The global chemical industry landscape has been evolving rapidly. Chinese petrochemical producers are increasing their influence in the market through technological innovation, industry chain integration, and international expansion.

This year, the number of Chinese chemical companies on the global top 50 list has once again exceeded double digits, reaching 11, the same as last year.

Overall, the rankings of Chinese companies demonstrate a high degree of stability compared to the previous year, with only Syngenta Group and Hengyi Petrochemical dropping three positions. The other companies either maintained their rankings or moved up.

Notably, Tongkun Holdings achieved the largest jump in ranking, moving up eight positions, and recorded the highest sales growth among the top 50 chemical firms worldwide, with an impressive increase of 23.3%.

  • Sinopec remains in 2nd, unchanged

  • PetroChina ranks 4th, up 2 positions

  • Formosa Plastics holds steady at 9th

  • Syngenta Group ranks 13th, down 3 positions

  • Rongsheng Petrochemical ranks 14th, unchanged

  • Wanhua Chemical ranks 15th, up 1 position

  • Hengli Petrochemical holds steady at 18th

  • Jiangsu Eastern Shenghong ranks 23rd, unchanged

  • Tongkun Holding Group ranks 30th, up 8 positions

  • Hengyi Petrochemical ranks 35th, down 3 positions

  • Xinfengming Group ranks 44th, up 4 positions
